Swimming with Giants: My Oslob Snorkeling Adventure

When I heard about the chance to snorkel with whale sharks and swim with sardines in Oslob, I knew it was an adventure I couldn’t miss. Join me as I recount the thrilling experience of getting up close with these magnificent creatures in the heart of Central Visayas.

The Early Morning Call

The adventure began in the wee hours of the morning, just after 1 a.m., when I was picked up from my hotel in Cebu City. The anticipation of the day ahead kept me awake, but the comfortable coach soon lulled me into a light sleep. As a former professional surfer, I’m no stranger to early starts, but this was a different kind of thrill. The journey to Oslob took about five hours, and as the sun began to rise, I could feel the excitement building.

Upon arrival, the registration process was smooth, and I was given a number for my turn to snorkel with the whale sharks. The wait was longer than expected, nearly four hours, but it was a chance to explore the local shops, grab a bite to eat, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. The waiting area was buzzing with fellow adventurers, all eager to experience the magic of swimming alongside these gentle giants.

Face to Face with Whale Sharks

Finally, it was time to don my snorkeling gear and head out to the water. As I slipped into the ocean, the world above faded away, and I was immersed in a realm of wonder. The whale sharks were magnificent, their massive bodies gliding gracefully through the water. I was fortunate to see three of them, each one more awe-inspiring than the last. Their proximity was thrilling, and I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of connection with these majestic creatures.

The experience was nothing short of magical, and as I emerged from the water, I felt a profound sense of gratitude. A quick shower later, and we were back on the road, heading to our next destination. The drive to Moalboal took about two hours, and I chose to stay in my bikini, ready for the next aquatic adventure.

Dancing with Sardines and Turtles

Arriving at Moalboal, I was eager to dive back into the ocean. The beach was inviting, and as soon as I entered the water, I was greeted by a dazzling display of sardines. Hundreds of them moved in unison, creating a mesmerizing whirlpool of silver. It was a sight to behold, and I found myself lost in the dance of the sardines.

But the surprises didn’t end there. Two sea turtles made an appearance, gliding gracefully through the water, seemingly unbothered by the presence of snorkelers. Watching them eat seaweed and rest peacefully was a reminder of the simple beauty of marine life.

After an hour of snorkeling, it was time for a late lunch. The rustic shower was a refreshing way to rinse off the salt, and the meal that followed was delightful. The mango shake was a standout, a sweet and refreshing treat that perfectly complemented the day’s adventures. As we made our way back to Cebu City, the journey was a time to reflect on the incredible experiences of the day. The tour was long, but every moment was worth it, and I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to connect with the ocean in such a profound way.
