Exploring Belize: From Ancient Ruins to Refreshing Pools
When the waves are calm, I seek adventure on land. This time, it was a journey through the heart of Belize, exploring ancient Maya ruins and vibrant birdlife with a local guide. Join me as I recount a day filled with history, nature, and the warmth of Belizean hospitality.
A Journey Through Time and Nature
The sun was just beginning to rise as we set off from San Ignacio, the air crisp and filled with the promise of adventure. Our guide, Selwyn, was a local legend, known for his uncanny ability to spot even the most elusive birds. As a surfer, I’m used to scanning the horizon for the perfect wave, but Selwyn’s eyes were trained on the treetops, where flashes of color betrayed the presence of exotic birds. Our journey to the Caracol Maya Site was punctuated by frequent stops, each one a chance to marvel at the vibrant avian life that calls Belize home.
The road to Caracol wound through lush forests and small villages, each turn revealing a new facet of Belize’s natural beauty. As we arrived at the ancient Maya city, the air was thick with history. Selwyn’s knowledge of the site was as deep as the ocean, and he shared stories of the nobles and peasants who once walked these paths. Climbing the mighty Canna, the largest man-made structure in Belize, I felt a sense of awe akin to catching a perfect wave. The view from the top was breathtaking, a sea of green stretching as far as the eye could see.
A Taste of Belizean Hospitality
After a morning of exploration, we were treated to a traditional Belizean lunch. The simplicity of stewed chicken, fresh tortillas, and homemade salsa was a reminder that sometimes the best meals are the ones made with love. Selwyn, ever the gracious host, had even arranged for us to stop at his mother’s house to pick fresh avocados from the tree. It was a small gesture, but one that spoke volumes about the warmth and hospitality of the Belizean people.
As we sat under the shade of a tree, enjoying our meal, I couldn’t help but reflect on the similarities between the surfing lifestyle and the way of life in Belize. Both are about living in the moment, appreciating the beauty of nature, and connecting with the people around you. It’s a lesson I’ve learned time and again on my travels, and one that I was reminded of during my time in Belize.
Refreshing Waters and Lasting Memories
Our journey continued to the Rio On Pools, a series of natural swimming holes nestled in the Mountain Pine Ridge. The cool, clear water was a welcome respite from the heat, and I couldn’t resist diving in. Floating on my back, I watched the clouds drift by, feeling a sense of peace that only comes from being in nature.
As the day drew to a close, I realized that this trip was more than just a tour of ancient ruins and natural wonders. It was a chance to connect with the land and its people, to learn from their stories and share in their way of life. Selwyn, with his keen eye and generous spirit, had given us a glimpse into the heart of Belize, and for that, I am grateful.
For those of you who, like me, are always chasing the next adventure, I highly recommend this Belizean journey. It’s a chance to step back in time, to immerse yourself in nature, and to experience the warmth and hospitality of a truly special place. Until next time, keep riding the waves and exploring the world.
