Highlights
  • Pedro St. James National Historic Site - Self-guided tours can be completed in one hour. The walking tour allows you the freedom to explore all the grounds and enjoy seeing the 18th century Great House and its related artefacts. Absorb the beauty of panoramic ocean views, across seven landscaped acres, and the old stamp room and picture collections.

Since its construction more than two centuries ago, Pedro St. James has been put to use in a variety of ways – as a cotton plantation, courthouse, jail, Government Assembly and even restaurant – before the Cayman Islands government finally purchased the property in 1996 and restored it to its 18th-century grandeur.

Perhaps best known as the “birthplace of democracy in the Cayman Islands,” Pedro St. James was the venue for a meeting on December 5, 1831, where the decision was made to form the islands’ first elected parliament. Later on May 3, 1835, the proclamation ending slavery in the British Empire was read from its steps.

There is also a gift shop and restaurant on-site.

A great rainy day activity! - Lovely grounds and well kept facilities. We did the self guided, which was fine for us. The movie experience was really good... But if someone from there is reading this... Closed captions would be a welcome addition! It was sometimes difficult to decipher through the accents. Also... We were confused by the signage on the front of the gift shop which said "enter here" but also had an arrow pointing left... This led us behind to the restaurant, which wasn't open. A more direct sign would say " enter here through gift shop" or "purchase tickets in gift shop". .. something to that effect. The guide who introduced the movie was very good, very passionate. A nice experience overall!

Beautiful house and grounds at PSJ. - If you are a history buff this is a "need to visit" location on Grand Cayman. A combination of restored house and grounds makes for a pleasant few hours of stepping back in time.

Beautiful scenery! - We loved this experience from beginning to end. The beautiful movie, was super informational and painted a beautiful picture of the history of the island. The gift shop also had the BEST prices we found on the island. We would definitely return for the same experience.

Beautiful setting - Sunday morning was the perfect time to visit. We had the place to ourselves to explore. The setting is beautiful and it is rich in Cayman history. It has a playground and a big empty space for children to run around. However, I don’t know that children would really enjoy the visit. I can picture a beautiful wedding there as I understand they have had a lot of them there.

Nice little attraction - The 25 minute movie was nice but a little confusion of on how the house changed throughout the year. Simple compared to other homes I visited.

St. James Pedro House - Nice to learn island history. Does NOT require a guided tour, as there are enough signs and plaques. We also did some challenging walk towards the shoreline for the ocean view.
