A Journey Back in Time

As a former professional surfer, my life has always been intertwined with the ocean, and the Cayman Islands have become my sanctuary. But every now and then, I crave a different kind of adventure—one that takes me beyond the waves and into the heart of history. That’s how I found myself at Pedro St. James Castle, the oldest stone structure in the Cayman Islands, ready to embark on a self-guided tour.

The moment I stepped onto the grounds, I was enveloped by the lush greenery and the salty breeze from the ocean. The Great House stood majestically, a testament to the island’s rich history. I decided to take the self-guided tour, allowing me the freedom to explore at my own pace. The grounds were expansive, with panoramic views of the ocean that reminded me of the endless horizons I chase on my surfboard.

Inside the Great House, I was transported back to the 18th century. The artifacts and exhibits told stories of the past, from its days as a cotton plantation to its role in the birth of democracy in the Cayman Islands. Each room was a window into a different era, and I found myself lost in the tales of those who had walked these halls before me.

Stories of the Past

While I wandered through the house, I couldn’t help but overhear snippets of a guided tour led by Tracy Eden Hurlston, a descendant of the original plantation owner’s family. His voice carried stories of the island, the family, and the house itself, painting vivid pictures of life on the plantation. I was drawn to his tales, and soon found myself joining the small group, eager to learn more.

Tracy’s stories were captivating, weaving together the history of the house with personal anecdotes and insights. He spoke of the slaves who once worked the land and their journey to freedom, as well as the man who took on the restoration of the house. His passion for the history of Pedro St. James was infectious, and I found myself hanging onto every word.

The tour included a photo history gallery and a multi-media presentation that brought the past to life. As we moved through the house, I felt a deep connection to the stories being told, much like the connection I feel to the ocean when I’m riding a wave. It was a reminder that history, like the sea, is vast and ever-changing.

A New Perspective

After the tour, I took a moment to reflect on the experience. The beauty of Pedro St. James lies not only in its architecture and history but also in the stories of the people who have called it home. It’s a place where the past and present coexist, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who shaped the island’s history.

As I made my way back to the bus stop, I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this historic site. It was a reminder that adventure can be found in unexpected places, and that sometimes, the most meaningful journeys are the ones that take us beyond the familiar.
