Additional Information

In the early February of 251, amid the final stages of the Decius’ persecution towards non-pagans, a young Christian maiden was martyred in Catania for refusing to offer sacrifices to the empire’s idols. An intricate scrutiny of Sant’Agata’s martyrdom amidst the remnants of the ancient roman Catania and the traces of the venues of the incident was conducted. It was an interplay of belief and logic, history and myth, custom and folklore that annually brings forth what is acclaimed as one of the most significant religious occasions worldwide.

A fascinating experience - This is fascinating tour - and Matilde is a lovely guide who brought the topic to life with a wealth of cultural and artistic knowledge. If you want to explore the real heart and soul of Catania, this is the way to do it! We got access to special rooms, passageways, underground mummification chambers etc. not normally granted to tourists. I'm so glad I took this tour and had the pleasure to meet Matilde!
