Go in the mud and come out 2 years younger. - We had an amazing time. Our tour guide Angel was very knowledgeable, friendly and even gave us helpful tips when it came to the time and place for tipping as to not get stuck trying to tip everyone that approached. Our driver Jesus was awesome as well. He made sure we got there and back safely. We felt safe the whole time. We did the morning tour and were one of the first groups to arrive which was perfect. That way it wasn’t crowded in the mud when we first got in. It was an awesome experience and would definitely recommend to others.

Great Experience! - This experience was incredible! I DEFINITELY recommend going in the morning because we got there before the crowds and were able to go up and straight into the volcano. Angel (our guide) was very knowledgeable and made sure we knew if he didn’t tell us it was included, that it wasn’t included. Make sure you bring some pesos to be able to tip people as they do their jobs.

A good volcano story - Very unusual and a good story. The 45 minute trip via mini van to the site gives you good idea of life outside the city. Then it’s hurry up and climb the very steep volcano in your bare feet. (Hurry, Before another tourist bus unloads) The climb up the volcano is challenging and there are hand rails . The guide holds onto everyone’s phones and he takes pictures for you. First you walk around the outside, you see the routine : and then climb down into mud. It’s cool mud even on a hot day. the men (who work there in the mud) physically move you around, first on your back and they give you a full body massage in the mud, roll you over to your belly and then move you to another corner. It’s like laying on pudding. You cannot feel the bottom but you will feel other people’s legs and feet brushing against you. Everyone is smiling and nervous. The walk down the volcano is terrifying and steep. Then walk barefoot for 50 meters to a freshwater lake where women wash you. After about 15 minute rinse then you go to a small picnic area, eat a snack and then run back to your van chased by natives demanding tips. It’s a story!

Volcano was cool, the rest wasn’t - This tour was just ok. I was told I would be picked up at the hotel and then was told to meet at certain location, that I went to and that still wasn’t the right spot. Finally found the guide…then we went to pick up others and waited for them 30 minutes and they never showed up. Volcano was ok, but too many people at once and hard to get in and out. Men giving massages were a little much and everyone wanted big tips. Not worth the money.

Average and overpriced - Very average. The Backpackers staff themselves were nice people and the driver was good. Hotel pick up was fine, we were driven to the volcano. However, it was hard to actually enjoy the mud volcano experience given it was so busy. You were pushed & pulled around in the mud by the people giving you a ‘massage’ or by other tourists trying to move around. Stayed in the mud less than 10 minutes before we were told to get out. Could hardly move for people. Then you were washed by the women in the nearby lake, which was fine but quite unnecessary - it’s only because they want tips. As you try and leave you’re surrounded by people asking for tips quite aggressively. The drive was longer than we were actually at the volcano. The description of this ‘tour’ also needs updating - what is the ‘bonus stop on Manzanillo Beach’? We booked through GiftOwl and the title and description literally says ‘including lunch’. Even on Tripadvisor the description mentions lunch. There was so lunch to speak of, only given a small empanada after you’ve washed the mud off. Overall, it would have been fine if this cost £20, but given it cost nearly £50 it’s a total rip-off and waste of money.
