Embark on a comprehensive city tour that speaks to why Cartagena was considered the financial hub of the Spanish in South America, making it a prime target for Caribbean pirates and privateers. This, in turn, sparked some of the most legendary and brutal naval conflicts within the continent. As a result, this city was fortified and surrounded with the largest defense system in the Caribbean. You’ll visit the stern Convent established and constructed between 1606-1611, positioned atop a hill at 140m elevation, which houses the city’s patron saint (Virgen de la Candelaria). Next, you’ll explore the largest fortification in the Caribbean, the Fort of San Felipe de Barajas. This fort played a decisive role in the 1741 naval battle against Admiral Vernon. Lastly, you’ll enjoy a guided stroll through the antique city, stopping at its squares, churches, and monuments. This is your opportunity to experience the magic of this incredible city (not recommended for cruise passengers).
