On the morning of March 13, 1741, the citizens of Cartagena were greeted by the sight of an enormous British armada, comprising 120-186 vessels and a force of 20,000 to 27,000 men, which included a minimum of 12,000 foot soldiers. This fleet launched an assault that led to the destruction of the original San Luis Fort, marking the commencement of the Battle for Cartagena de Indias.
