The Totumo volcano has become one of the best excursions to take a few hours from Cartagena, since it has a number of minerals that will benefit your skin; When you immerse yourself in this relaxing mud bath you can connect a little with nature.

  • Bring a towel
  • Bring an extra change of clothes
  • You will be offered to buy dried mud to take home. Due to its natural properties from its origin, this sludge has explosive properties, which the TSA will point out if you have a connecting flight when returning to the United States. I could keep it, but additional screening measures were needed before TSA clearance.

Recommended but prepare before you go - My kids (16 and 17) enjoyed this experience. We were a little disappointed that it advertised Paintball and Horseback riding as options for the excursion that were just unavailable. I have some things to consider before you go. - Bring a change of clothes - you get all muddy and rinse off in a nearby lake. However, you may be wet afterward so that you may want an additional change of clothes. The second stop does allow swimming in a pool if you desire, so you may want to prepare for that as well, as you will be wet again. - Bring a towel - Be sure to have small denominations of Columbian pesos (4 -5,000/per person) to tip. At the volcano, locals are there to help you along the way. Someone will take your towel and shoes to wait for you after the volcano and lake, someone will use your phone to take pictures, someone will give you a massage in the volcano, someone will rinse you off in the lake, and while waiting for the rest of the group, someone will offer snacks and drinks at a cost. - You will be offered to purchase dry mud to take home. Due to its natural properties from its source, this mud has explosive properties, which TSA will flag if you have a connection flight upon returning to the States. I could keep it, but additional screening measures were needed before clearing TSA. I would recommend it, I now know to be more prepared next time.
