Highlights
  • Orígenes Restaurante Bar - Spend over two hours in our kitchen, nestled in the vibrant historical center of Cartagena, alongside two expert chefs. We’ll divulge our culinary secrets, the tales behind our dishes, and the origins of our ingredients. Donning aprons and chef hats, we’ll dive into the art of cooking, starting with crafting coconut rice from the ground up (which will later be served in our restaurant). Next, we’ll whip up crispy patacones, followed by a local favorite, panela water. Our journey continues with Cartagena’s quintessential fish dish: Mojarra roja al papillon, a recipe cherished by our forebears. As the fish cooks, we’ll take a moment to sway to the region’s traditional music, as our chef is also a dance enthusiast! Finally, we’ll tackle empanadas, mastering the dough and fillings. To cap off our culinary adventure, we’ll savor the fruits of our labor in the restaurant, sharing our cooking stories and fostering new friendships!

A must-do activity in Cartagena! - This was one of my favorite excursions in Cartagena. For the price, you're getting a fully immersive cooking experience, learning about the culture through food, and getting a full meal. It was so much fun! The restaurant was very clean, and the host chefs were both so kind and funny. The food was AMAZING, the coconut rice that we made might be some of the best coconut rice you can find in Cartagena. 10/10 recommend!

Perfect afternoon - This was a really fun experience, mainly due to our sous chef (interpreter) Donna and chef Chi Chi (who claims not to speak English, though clearly understands!) We were in a small kitchen in back of the restaurant. We helped prepare the brown coconut rice, which was amazing and quite a lot of work. The patacones were the best I've had in CTG and a new experience for me. We seasoned up the red fish with the prepared ingredients and baked in foil-so delicious. Also on the menu were empanadas where we made the dough, stuffed w/meat and or veg. and fried. While things were cooking, we danced with our talented chef. Of course we ate it all in the dining room in Origenes after! We did start late, almost 4:00 but, it was due to the fact others were changing the menu they preferred (mostly vegetarian). Still, the class was way over 3 hours so, plan your evening accordingly. Lovely new friends and a scrumptious meal!

Great afternoon cooking - Wow a great experience to cook with our family and meet new people. Both the chef and helper (translator) were very professional, fun and kind. We learned a lot about Colombian food and how to prepare a few dishes, drinks, etc. Would highly recommend.

learning about local cuisine - Fun way to learn more about the local cuisine. We all made our own empanadas, fish and coconut rice and sat down with the group afterwards to enjoy our efforts.

Cartagena and it's cooking culture - The chef and our translator were excellent and the food was both easy to prepare as well as delicious and I would certainly recommend this course to others. I've done a few cooking classes in various countries and sadly this was the first that left me a bit flat - nothing at all to do with the venue or the people running it but with our other tour members. We were a small group, six in total, and there was a couple who very much dominated the group and even started demanding to eat the food while we were still cooking it as a group to share later. Overall - great cookery class and learnt a lot about the food culture, ingredients and how to create the dishes - sadly a bit overshadowed by our fellow trainees chefs.

Great afternoon in a lovely kitchen - The chef and the presenter were really fun and engaging. We met other people who love to make good food. The coconut rice - which we made from scratch, including making the coconut milk from a real coconut - was the best that I have tasted in Cartagena. And I can hardly wait to get home and make real Colombian empanadas.
