- First Murphy House - Ever wondered about the origins of the enchanting Village of Carmel-by-the-Sea? Join us to discover the tale of this artist village that has captivated visitors worldwide. Have you heard of the Milk Shrine or the story of a teenager who built a home and became a master builder back in 1902?
- Golden Bough Playhouse - Our journey begins at one of many delightful courtyards. This is the site of the original Golden Bough theater, where we learn about Ted Kuster, who fulfilled his dream of creating “one of the most beautiful and best-equipped small theaters in America.” We’ll share personal stories from those who attended its remarkable performances.
- L’Auberge Carmel - As we head to L’Auberge, we’ll pass City Hall. Do you recall which famous film star and director once served as mayor here? Discover the intriguing story of why this small town incorporated in 1916. Right next door is L’Auberge Carmel, showcasing stunning European architecture. Hear the unlikely tale of the young man whose dream it was. You’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into historic Prague, with a nod to that heritage incorporated into the building. Can you guess what it might be?
- Church of the Wayfarer - Entering through the beautiful biblical garden, we arrive at the charming Church of the Wayfarer. With its slate roof and small bell tower, it resembles a forest chapel. In traditional style, the bell is still rung by hand, and the stained glass windows are a must-see. Dogs are everywhere, and you’ll hear about the special place they hold in Carmel.
- Cypress Inn - Here, architecture and Hollywood fame unite. Beloved film star Doris Day invested in this inn, which stands as a testament to her enduring legacy. A visit here evokes California’s Spanish past through its architecture and exquisite glazed tile work.
- Tuck Box - No visit to this charming village is complete without stopping at one of its many fairytale cottages. These whimsical and intriguing buildings have a delightful story of how this style evolved by chance. Here’s a hint: “What wouldn’t a young man in love do for the girl of his dreams?” We navigate hidden passageways and gardens, exploring amazing shops and fabulous galleries, all while enjoying snippets of Carmel’s history.
- Devendorf Park - Our walk takes us past unique artist studios where, if we’re lucky, we might meet the artist. The aroma of fresh coffee and baked goods accompanies us as we enter Devendorf Park, guarded by a majestic California Live Oak tree.
- Hog’s Breath Inn - A bit of lore about actor and director Clint Eastwood leads us to the delightful Hog’s Breath Inn, adjacent to the Eastwood Building. Its cozy fireplaces warm diners on the patio, and the bar features wild boar heads, hunting trophies, and a nod to the man who famously said, “Go ahead, make my day!”
- The Pilgrim’s Way Community Bookstore and Secret Garden - Book lovers will want to return here after the tour. This unique independent bookstore also hosts the Secret Garden. In this serene and peaceful setting, we find ourselves inside an authentic 1970s geodesic dome. If you remember the hippy era, you’ll feel right at home!
- United States Postal Service - Curious why we stop at the post office? Like everything in Carmel, the post office was a common gathering spot to collect mail and meet new neighbors. However, Carmel’s residents don’t take themselves too seriously, and a humorous reminder greets them every time they pick up their mail. You’ll appreciate their sense of humor.
- Carmel Art Association - It’s fitting that our final stop is at a true Carmel institution. The Art Association, founded at the very beginning of Carmel’s history, has thrived in various forms for over a century. It remains owned by numerous talented artists. A rotating selection of high-quality sculptures and paintings is on display and available for purchase. If you love art, this is a “Must See.”

Great history of Carmel - Our tour guide Monica was extremely knowledgeable and a great storyteller. She also actively engaged the participants.
Our teenage granddaughter begrudgingly joined us on the tour. At the end she said it was the best tour she had ever been on.

Tour by the author who literally wrote the book!!! - My wife and I were grateful to have Monica H. all by ourself. What an incredible wealth of historical knowledge. She literally wrote the Carmel history book!!! We had such a memorable time learning about the history from someone who not only has lived in the area for many years but also personally knew many of the residents…There were tidbits of history only Monica could share. We would highly recommend you taking this tour upon arrival. Thank you for great memories Monica!!

A Must Tour for Your Carmel Visit - 5 stars! Monica was a fantastic tour guide. My mom and I were lucky enough to have her all to ourselves, and she gave us such a special experience. She showed us not only the main highlights but also the hidden corners of Carmel that we never would have found on our own. Her knowledge of the city is impressive, and her love for it is contagious. I highly recommend booking a tour with Monica. Thank you for such a memorable day!
