Bo-Kaap - Known as the Malay Quarter, Bo-Kaap is a vibrant, multicultural neighborhood predominantly inhabited by Muslims. It boasts the largest concentration of pre-1850 architecture in South Africa and is the oldest surviving residential area in Cape Town. Visitors can admire the colorful houses, learn about the history and culture of Bo-Kaap, savor delicious Cape Malay cuisine at top restaurants, interact with locals, and take stunning, artistic photos.
-
Company’s Gardens - The oldest garden, park, and heritage site in South Africa, originally established in 1650 to grow fresh produce for ships rounding the Cape. It was also the starting point for the 30,000-strong demonstration led by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 1989, where he coined the term ‘rainbow people’ to describe South Africa’s diverse population.
The garden is famous for its friendly squirrels, and visitors can purchase nuts to feed them—a favorite activity for children. The food is delightful, offering traditional Capetonian dishes alongside standard lunch options. The garden also houses the South African National Gallery, featuring temporary exhibitions by leading local and occasional international artists. This is a wonderful way to spend a few hours, feeding squirrels, enjoying Capetonian cuisine, and visiting an art exhibition at the South African National Gallery.
- St. George’s Cathedral - A 44-year-old metropolitan church of the Anglican Church of South Africa and a congregation. This church served as a religious and political hub for the first black archbishop of Cape Town, Desmond Tutu.
The late Archbishop Desmond Tutu was renowned for leading an anti-apartheid movement from this location, welcoming people of all races and backgrounds into the church. As a result, the cathedral is recognized as a symbol of democracy. The stained glass windows are captivating, and a section of the Berlin Wall is located nearby.
-
Groote Kerk - A Dutch-Reformed church in Cape Town and the oldest Christian worship site in South Africa, built in 1841 by Herman Schuette.
This church is a picturesque centerpiece, with a steeple rising nearly 150 feet from the double transept building. The interior is adorned with soaring stained glass windows and a high barrel-vaulted ceiling.
