The path up Lion’s head wraps around the mountain in a spiral, gradually leading you to the peak. Partway through, the trail becomes more challenging, requiring you to clamber over rocks using your hands. The gradient then increases dramatically, taking you to the first ladder and then across a ledge outfitted with a chain for balance. Following this, you’ll encounter a crossroads where you can either opt left and bypass two rocky ascents, or turn right and tackle them head on. If daunting vertical climbs aren’t your thing, keep left, moving past large pine trees to reach the southeast ridge edge. On reaching Lion’s Head summit, you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking 360-degree panorama. It’s one of three mountains framing Cape Town city, standing in front of the impeccable Table Mountain and surrounded by the world’s smallest yet most biodiverse floral kingdom. As dusk approaches, the city will light up gradually, providing a unique spectacle for your descent, for which you’ll be given a headlamp.
