A Journey Through Time and Nature

As I embarked on the Cao Bang Highlights tour, I was reminded of the countless road trips I took across America in my youth. The open road, the promise of discovery, and the camaraderie of fellow travelers have always been a source of joy for me. This time, however, the journey was on two wheels, and the destination was the breathtaking landscapes of Cao Bằng, Vietnam.

Our day began with a warm welcome from Lin, our guide, who ensured we were well-prepared for the adventure ahead. As we gathered for breakfast, I felt a familiar sense of excitement, akin to those early morning starts on the road with my family. The group was a mix of eager travelers, each with their own story, and as we shared our meal, I was reminded of the small-town diners where strangers became friends over a cup of coffee.

The first stop was the Phia Thap incense village, where the air was filled with the rich aroma of incense sticks in various stages of production. Watching the Nung ethnic villagers at work, I was transported back to the artisanal workshops of the Midwest, where craftsmanship and tradition are passed down through generations. It was a poignant reminder of the universal language of dedication and skill.

Nature’s Masterpieces

As we continued our journey, the landscape unfolded like a painting, with lush greenery and mist-shrouded mountains creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. Our guide, Chuyen, shared stories of the land, much like the local historians I often encounter on my travels through America’s heartland. His knowledge and passion for the region added depth to the stunning vistas that surrounded us.

The highlight of the morning was undoubtedly the Ban Gioc Waterfall, a majestic cascade that straddles the border between Vietnam and China. Standing at the edge of the falls, I was reminded of the mighty Mississippi, a natural wonder that has inspired countless travelers. The roar of the water and the spray on my face were invigorating, a testament to the power and beauty of nature.

After a visit to the Truc Lam Buddhist temple, where tranquility reigned supreme, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch. The meal was a delightful blend of local flavors, reminiscent of the roadside diners where I have savored many a hearty meal. It was a moment to relax, reflect, and connect with fellow travelers, much like the communal tables of my favorite small-town eateries.

The Enchantment of Angel Eye Mountain

Our afternoon was spent exploring the Nguom Ngao cave, a subterranean wonderland of stalactites and stalagmites. The cave’s intricate formations were a marvel to behold, akin to the natural sculptures found in the caves of Kentucky. As we wandered through the chambers, I felt a sense of awe and wonder, a reminder of the hidden treasures that lie beneath the surface.

The final stop of the day was the Angel Eye Mountain, a natural wonder with a unique circular hole that offers a window to the sky. Standing in the heart of the valley, I was reminded of the vast open spaces of the American West, where the horizon stretches endlessly and the sky seems to go on forever. It was a fitting end to a day filled with discovery and delight.

As we made our way back to Cao Bang city, I reflected on the journey and the connections made along the way.
