In the morning, we will pick you up from your Cairo hotel and take you to the Saint Simon Monastery, also known as the Zabbaleen Cave Church. Situated on Mokattam Mountain, it’s a brief drive through ‘Garbage City’, a location home to a large community of garbage collectors, also known as Zabbaleen. Various churches have been constructed within the caves of Mokattam. Firstly, we will visit Saint Simon the Tanner Hall and St. Mark’s Church.
This expansive cave was discovered in 1974. It contained hundreds of tons of stones reaching up to its ceiling, 17 meters from the ground, which was later modified to consist of two levels. The upper level hosts the St. Simon the Tanner Hall, which can hold 2000 people for spiritual gatherings. The walls are adorned with an array of beautiful rock-carved images depicting scenes from the Bible.
Subsequently, we move on to visit the Cathedral of Virgin Mary and St. Simon the Tanner. At the end of the tour, we will escort you back to your hotel.
