The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - Situated in Tahrir Square, the Egyptian Museum (Museum of Egyptian Antiquities) has been a hub for Egyptologists since its inception, showcasing some of the world’s most remarkable ancient artifacts. Although some exhibits are transitioning to the new Grand Egyptian Museum, it remains an essential destination for those fascinated by ancient Egypt.
Pyramids of Giza - As one of the enigmatic Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (and the only one still intact), the Pyramids of Giza—the Great Pyramid of Khufu, Pyramid of Khafre, and Pyramid of Menkaure—continue to captivate over 4,000 years later. Witnessing these 4th-dynasty pyramids and their guardian, the Great Sphinx, emerging from the Giza Plateau is a must for any Cairo itinerary (and a primary reason many travelers visit Egypt).
Great Sphinx - Standing 66 feet (20 meters) tall, the Sphinx of Giza is a symbol of ancient Egypt, sparking ongoing discussions about its significance, age, and original creator. With a human head and a lion’s body, the Sphinx—one of the world’s largest and oldest statues—represents strength, power, and wisdom.
Second Day in Cairo Visiting Islamic & Coptic Cairo
Old Egypt For Fine Art - Located in southern Cairo on the Nile’s east bank, Old Cairo, also known as Misr Al-Qadima, dates back to the sixth century BC and encompasses the sites of several early Egyptian capitals, including Fustat. It merges into Islamic Cairo to the east, with its core being Coptic Cairo—home to a ruined Roman fortress and numerous early medieval Coptic churches.
Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary) - Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Hanging Church (Al-Muallaqa), still in use today, is known as the Hanging or Suspended Church because it is constructed atop the Water Gate of Roman Babylon. Steep stairs lead from the forecourt to a 19th-century façade crowned by twin bell towers. Beyond lies a small inner courtyard, often bustling with vendors selling taped liturgies and videos of the Coptic pope, Shenouda III. The interior of this 9th-century (some claim 7th-century) church, renovated multiple times over the centuries, features three barrel-vaulted, wooden-roofed aisles. Ivory-inlaid screens conceal the three haikals (altar areas), but in front of them, elevated on 13 slender pillars representing Christ and his disciples, is a fine pulpit used only on Palm Sunday. One of the pillars, darker than the others, is said to symbolize Judas. In the baptistry, off to the right, a panel has been cut out of the floor revealing the Water Gate below. From here, there is a good view of one of the gate’s twin towers.
Synagogue Ben Ezra - The Ben Ezra Synagogue was once a Christian place of worship known as El-Shamieen Church. According to legend, the building was erected on the exact spot where Moses was found as a baby in his basket. However, when the Coptic Christians who owned it could no longer afford the annual taxes imposed by the Muslim rulers, they had to sell the church. It was purchased by Abraham Ben Ezra in 882 AD for 20,000 dinars and converted into a Jewish synagogue. The synagogue became a gathering place for North African Jews during major festivals, and renowned rabbis visited to worship in Cairo. During a restoration in 1890, the most famous and diverse Geniza in the world was discovered. In an empty space below the roof,
