Coptic Cairo, a section of Old Cairo, includes the Babylon Fortress, the Coptic Museum, the Hanging Church, the Greek Church of St. George, and many other Coptic churches and historical sites. According to Christian tradition, the Holy Family visited this area and stayed at the site of Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church (Abu Serga).

The founding date of the Ben Ezra Synagogue is unknown, but documents found in the geniza suggest it predates 882 CE and is likely pre-Islamic.
- Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hasan is a monumental mosque and madrasa located in Salah al-Din Square in Cairo’s historic district. Built between 1356 and 1363 during the Bahri Mamluk period, it was commissioned by Sultan an-Nasir Hasan and houses the four Islamic schools.
Completed in 1363, this mosque and school symbolize the power of the Mamluk sultans. It was initiated by Hassan, the energetic seventh son of Mohamed Hassan.
- Al Rifai Mosque - Al-Rifa’i Mosque is located in Citadel Square, next to the Cairo Citadel. It is named after Ali Abu Shubbak, who is buried there. It also serves as the royal mausoleum of Muhammad Ali’s family.
- Mosque of Muhammad Ali - Built by Mohamed Ali in 1830 A.D., it is known as the Alabaster Mosque because it is made of alabaster inside. It features beautiful colors. Mohamed Ali, originally from Turkey, built it in the Turkish style.
- Al-Azhar Mosque - The first mosque built in Cairo in 971 A.D.
Al-Azhar Mosque, known simply as al-Azhar in Egypt, is located in Cairo’s historic Islamic core. Commissioned as the new capital of the Fatimid Caliphate in 970, it was the first mosque established in a city that later earned the nickname “the City of a Thousand Minarets.”
- Khan Al-Khalili - Khan el-Khalili market is one of Cairo’s most iconic attractions. Established in 1382, this sprawling bazaar is a must-visit for anyone in the Egyptian capital.
