Established in 970 as the new capital of the Fatimid Caliphate, it was the first mosque in a city that later became known as “the City of a Thousand Minarets”.[b] Its name is believed to be derived from az-Zahrāʾ (lit. ’the shining one’), a title attributed to Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad.

Commissioned by the Mamluk Sultan Hasan ibn al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun between 757 AH/1356 AD and 764 AH/1362 AD, it is located at the end of Muhammad Ali Street, directly across from the 19th-century al-Rifa’i mosque in Salah al-Din Square.
