• Cagliari - Embark on a journey through the ancient quarters of this city, brimming with cultural and historical significance. Begin your approximately two-hour walking tour from the hilltops, descending through the narrow streets. A knowledgeable guide will lead you to explore significant landmarks, including the Royal Palace, the Cathedral of Cagliari, and various smaller churches, as well as the Pisan Walls and Towers.
  In Cagliari, access to historical monuments and sites is not guaranteed daily. Visiting hours can differ, and some sites may be temporarily closed for private events or important ceremonies without advance notice.
  If requested beforehand, we can arrange transportation to Poetto Beach and the charming San Benedetto’s Market (this will result in a shorter city center tour).
  The same route is available by car, offering a hop-on hop-off experience for those who prefer to ride rather than walk (note that indoor monument visits with our guide will not be possible in this format).
• The Royal Palace - Originating from the 14th century, this edifice became the residence of the Viceroy in 1337 by the decree of Peter IV of Aragon. The palace has undergone numerous modifications, including the construction of the grand staircase to the first floor by Piedmontese engineers de Guibert and de Vincenti. In 1735, Della Vallea spearheaded the refurbishment of the first floor’s “piano nobile.” The west-facing façade, with its main entrance directly aligned with the staircase, was renovated in 1769, as indicated by the date on the lunette above the French window leading to the central balcony. The royal family, exiled from Turin during Napoleon’s occupation, resided here from 1799 to 1815. In 1885, the building was repurposed as the official premises of the Province, which initiated restoration efforts. The decorative elements of the Council Room were entrusted to Domenico Bruschi from Perugia for the frescoes and to Angeletti for the stuccoes.
• Torre dell’Elefante - In the early 14th century, Pisa constructed formidable towers to fortify its position in southern Sardinia against the growing Aragonese influence in the Mediterranean. In 1535, Charles V, the esteemed ruler of the Holy Roman Empire, recognized these towers as some of Europe’s finest military fortifications.
  Completed in 1307, the Elephant Tower, with its robust limestone block construction, slender arrow slits, and sturdy gates, safeguarded the southwestern flank of Castello. Spanning four levels and exceeding thirty meters in height, it also served as a vital lookout against potential maritime assaults.
  Today, it remains a prominent entry point to Castello, having also functioned as a gunpowder store, armory, and prison in the past.
  After restoration to its original state, the Elephant Tower welcomes visitors through the entrance adjacent to the church of St. Joseph.
• Bastione di Saint Remy - Counted among Cagliari’s most esteemed monumental structures, the Saint Remy Bastion was erected atop the old defensive ramparts of the medieval walls. Named after the first Piedmontese Viceroy, Baron of Saint Remy, this grand structure features a panoramic terrace and the covered walkway below, known as Passeggiata Coperta, designed by Giuseppe Costa and Fulgenzio Setti in 1896. The bastion, showcasing classic architectural elements with white and yellow limestone columns and Corinthian capitals, was officially opened in 1902. The double staircase and triumphal arch suffered significant damage from bombings during World War II in 1943 but were later meticulously reconstructed. Over the years, the Passeggiata Coperta has hosted various functions, initially serving as a banquet hall, then as an infirmary during the war, and subsequently as a refuge for those displaced by the bombings.
  In 1948, it was the venue for the inaugural International Trade Fair of Sardinia.
• Porta Cristina - Porta Cristina serves as a gateway to the Castello district, linking Buoncammino Avenue with Arsenale Square.
  Inspired by Rome’s Porta Angelica, it is dedicated to Maria Cristina of Bourbon, the consort of King Carlo Felice di Savoia.
  The neoclassical gate, designed by Count Carlo Pilo Boyl and sanctioned by the king, features an open archway flanked by two pilasters supporting an entablature with two overhanging cornices. Above the archway, a semi-circular lunette bears the following dedication inscription:

“Karolus Felix Rex
viam planiorem brevioremque a Castro Caralis
ad portam arcis regiam aperuit
Maria Cristina Regina
Portae egressus in apertam viam nomen suum imposuit
MDCCCXXV
Januario Rotario regni praeside”
