Founded in 1376 during the Goryeo Dynasty by Hyegeun, the royal preceptor of King Gongmin, the temple was destroyed during the Japanese invasions and rebuilt in the early 1930s. In 1974, Jeongam took office and prayed for the temple’s restoration as Avalokitesvara. He dreamt of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva ascending to heaven on a dragon, leading to the temple’s renaming to Haedong Yonggungsa Temple.
