The 602-foot-high, curved gravity dam holds back Lake Shasta, a vast blue reservoir with a 365-mile shoreline nestled amid evergreen hills and the snow-covered peak of Mount Shasta.
Sundial Bridge - The Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay is a world-renowned pedestrian bridge and public art installation that spans the Sacramento River in Redding, connecting the north and south campuses of Turtle Bay Exploration Park. As its name suggests, the Sundial Bridge is a functioning sundial and one of the largest in the world. Its shadow traces a large arc, recording only four hours a day from 11 am to 3 pm. It is not accurate in winter due to the shadow being too far into the arboretum. The bridge celebrates human creativity and ingenuity, key themes of the 300-acre Turtle Bay Exploration Park. The steel, glass, and granite span evokes a sense of weightlessness, and the translucent, non-skid decking offers spectacular night views. The bridge is also environmentally sensitive to its river setting.
