Highlights

During the tour you are going to see a huge variety of sights in a relatively small part of Pest. The Jewish Quarter of the seventh district is quite compact, that’s why walking is the best way of exploring it.

Whichever direction we choose to start our walk in the quarter, we are going to see a lot from the second largest non-Orthodox synagogue in the world to the smallest prayer houses, attractive residential buildings and memorial places of the area: astonishing, all with their own stories. Some of the gems of our itinerary you might already be familiar with but by taking part in the tour you will have the chance to build a new perspective towards them: the synagogues of the so-called synagogue triangle of Budapest such as the Kazinczy, the Rumbach and the Dohány Street Synagogue, the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Garden with the touching Emmanuel tree, the Budapest Jewish Museum and the exhibitions of the Jewish Archives, The Vasvári Street Synagogue, the Carl Lutz Memorial, the stumbling stones of the quarter’s streets, the last remaining part of the WWII ghetto wall or the iconic Shoes Monument on the riverbank of the Danube.

I will also bring you to places mostly visited and used by the locals. You can peep into their everyday lives: courtyards just like the Gozsdu Courtyard, little shops, eateries, confectioneries, the mikveh in Kazinczy Street, art galleries, festival scenes, old and newly opened cafés, the unique ruin bars including the iconic Szimpla will all make you get closer to an insider’s look. Just let yourself emerge in the atmosphere! Our itinerary can be highly flexible. If you have deeper interest in something and want to spent more time in a place or you would skip another, no problem. The aim is to give you a good overall picture with lots of stories rather than facts: Always trying to organise the tour as informative, integrating and fun as it is possible.

Harnessing a resurgence in Jewish culture, the district is presently home to the largest Jewish community in Central and Eastern Europe. The Budapest Jewish Walk immerses you directly into the midst of this district, revealing its past and present.

  • A moderate amount of walking is involved but you can always ask for a break
  • Dress code: be prepared with your own hat/cap and scarf if you do not want to wear the pieces provided by the synagogues

Incredible, Fascinating & Engaging! - I was very hesitant to book an 8 hour tour since it was our first time to Budapest but Timea Tarjani was the perfect guide. I have been on many tours but this was by far the best tour I have had the pleasure to attend. We were able to see and learn more of the culture, history and city that we ever would have been able to on our own. The pace, narration and timing was exceptional. We were able to avoid many of the crowds for a more intimate experience. Our only regret was that we didn't have more time in Budapest to spend with our guide. I highly recommend booking a tour with Timea. She is simply the best!

Amazing - My time with Timea was the highlight of my trip to Budapest. We did a four hour tour of the Jewish quarter and other Jewish sites in Budapest. Timea was extremely knowledgeable and interesting and her English is excellent. She also shared some of her family’s experiences which really personalized the tour. I felt like I was spending time with a friend. I highly recommend her - and I hold guides to a very high standard.

Great tour, awesome guide. - Great tour with a really knowledgable guide. It was our firat time in Budapest so Timea adjusted things as we went and effortlessly blended together Hungarian history, architecture and general sightseeing with our Jewish tour which made for a really excellent 1st day in Budapest. We really enjoyed.

Special Tour of Budapest - My husband and I had only one day to do some sightseeing in Budapest. We wanted our day to have some focus but did not want to be herded around in some large touristy group. I can't say enough great things about Timea as a guide. First, she is warm & friendly. Second, she is exceptionally knowledgable about all aspects of the city. Third, she speaks English perfectly. During the 4+ hours we spent together together walking leisurely through the city, Timea led us around Budapest's most significant points of interest while enlightening us about the city's and country's history, pointing out its architectural highlights, and engaging us in a wide-ranging conversation along the way. We spent some time at the Shoes on the Danube memorial, reflecting on its significance. We then headed into the Jewish Quarter where we saw the last remnants of the ghetto wall, we visited 3 magnificent synagogues, examined buildings, architecture and the hidden meaning of the artistry in the neighborhood that we never would have seen or understood just by reading a guidebook or being led in a large group. We felt as though we have made a friend in Timea and hope to return to spend more time in that magical city. Timea made it a truly memorable experience. As such, her tour is a must-do when in Budapest.

Walk and learn in Budapest - Our guide Timea was extremely knowledgeable and eager to not only answer our many questions but also dive deeper into discussion about what we were seeing and learning. She was generous to share general information about the beautiful city of Budapest.

Wonders of the Budapest Jewish Quarter - If you wish a tour of Budapest and especially the Jewish Quarter than there is no one better than Timi. Her dedication and support of Jewish life past, present and future in Budapest is unsurpassed. My wife and I cannot have had a nicer day than we had with Timi seeing the Synagogues and Jewish Quarter. Timi’s knowledge and passion shines through and we hope to keep in touch with her in the future.

Exceptional Jewish Quarter tour - My husband and I went on a 3-hour Jewish Quarter tour with Timi. She exceeded expectations. Not only did we learn a lot about the history of the Jewish Quarter but her in-depth knowledge and personal experiences added an additional dimension to our experience. Our tour with Timi was wonderful and we are still thinking and talking about the details of our experience. Don't hesitate!

More than we could have imagined - Words can not truly express how amazing spending the day with Timea was for us. As she shared her city with us, the love for Budapest shined, especially when we visited the Jewish Quarter. We did not feel like I was spending the day with a "tour guide." We felt like I spent the day with a friend.

An outstanding experience - Timi was an outstanding guide. Not only is she incredibly knowledgeable, but her English is outstanding and she is a lovely person. We learned about the history of the community by seeing small nooks and crannies not visible from the street. Her insights on the architecture were really interesting. She adapted the tour for my sore back so we could visit all the highlights. We received great restaurant recommendations too. She also spoke about life in Hungary today. I can't imagine a better guide to this wonderful city.
