Highlights
  • The Choral Temple - The Choral Temple is a synagogue located in Bucharest. It is a copy of Vienna’s Leopoldstadt-Tempelgasse Great Synagogue. The synagogue was devastated by the far-right Legionaries/Nazis, but was then restored after World War II, in 1945.
It still hosts daily religious services in the small hall, being one of the few active synagogues in the city and in Romania.
  • Museum of History of the Jewish Community - The amazing Holy Union Temple synagogue was constructed in 1836, this building has served as a museum of Jewish history since 1978. A number of separate exhibitions display how the once vibrant Jewish community of Bucharest used to live, while there is also an impressive Jewish liturgical collection, most of which was assembled by Moses Rosen, Romania’s chief rabbi from 1964-94 who founded the museum.
  • Holocaust Memorial - Unveiled in October 2009, Romania’s Holocaust Memorial finally recognises the country’s role in the genocide of Europe’s Jews. As the Wiesel Report - commissioned by the Romanian government to investigate the Holocaust in Romania - concluded, no country outside Germany was responsible for the deaths of more Jews than Romania. The memorial itself comprises a column on which each side is written a single Hebrew letter. Taken together they read zachor (remember). There is also a hall of remembrance, and a number of plaques containing the names of many Romanian Holocaust victims.
  • Teatrul Evreiesc de Stat - Edifice of Hebrew culture

Additional Information

This is an exclusive tour tailored just for your group. During this tour, you will explore the most important landmarks that are associated with the history of Bucharest’s Jewish community.

We will start the tour by picking you up from your hotel and heading to the Coral Temple, touted as the most beautiful temple in Bucharest. There we will meet a guide of Jewish descent who will share with us his remarkable life story and the history of Jews in Romania.

We will then head over to the Holocaust Museum, which is located within a spectacular Synagogue. Here, another guide of Jewish descent will educate us about the unfortunate circumstances of the Holocaust in Bucharest.

Following this, we will proceed to the Jewish Theater to witness a remarkable representation of Jewish culture.

The tour incorporates a visit to the Holocaust monument, a poignant reminder to remember history and avoid repeating past mistakes.

Regrettably, during World War II, Romania implemented Hitler’s agenda of Jewish extermination.

  • The Jewish Theatre can be visited only if there are no rehearsals

Amazing guide - Radu was an amazing guide. He managed to get us into synagogues that were closed for the holidays. He took his time and didn’t rush us anywhere. He made all the information sound vital and interesting.

Eloquently stated ! - Catalin provided a narrative of Romanian Jewish history that reflected a deep respect for the suffering and tragedies known to have occurred in the spaces he introduced very eloquently! I was fortunate to communicate with him in both Romanian as well as English and he has clearly mastered the ability to use easy language as a mechanism to relay complex and deeply meaningful concepts relating to painful historical facts. Thank you for an enlightening guide. I recommend his work to anyone seeking insights into Romanian and Romanian Jewish history.

Jewish Life in Bucharest by private car - Radu was fabulous. He was incredibly knowledgeable about Jewish history in Romania. He took us to the few remaining synagogues in Bucharest which are unfortunately closed right now due to the current situation in Israel. We spent a lovely half hour with Marcel finding out about the only theatre in the world that has plays done entirely in Yiddish. We very much enjoyed spending time and learning about Romanian Jewish history and culture. We highly recommend Radu.

Great Tour of Bucharest - We toured Jewish Bucharest with Radu in early September. Radu drove us from site to site, telling us a lot about Bucharest and the Jews that lived there and the current Jewish community. We went to the currently active synagogue, the Jewish History center in another no longer functioning synagogue, the Yiddish Theater and the Holocaust Memorial. We drove through the old Jewish part of town and had lunch at an Israeli-type restaurant. Radu was full of information but let the curators of the various sites fill in much more information. Even if you are not Jewish, this tour lgives you a chance to see what Bucharest had been like before WWIi.

Didn’t happen - The tour never happened; they had no guides so they refunded the money. The website could have had it as unavailable.
