Additional Information

The query often posed to me is ‘What makes this experience stand out?’

While it’s not my first or sole venture, and certainly won’t be my last, I could engage in this all day!

Each visit uncovers fresh aspects of the village and its craft…

Moreover, I am fortunate to be accompanied by Mr. Hoang, a fervent and proficient local who excels at teaching the rudiments of traditional pottery in a swiftly grasped manner for novices as well as those accustomed to automated tables. His experience spans around a decade.

The thrill is witnessing you, and other like-minded explorers, gain new insights about the local history, traditions, populace, and gaining hands-on experience in the craft. Every emotion, from anticipation, astonishment, initial disappointment, endurance, joy, to relaxation…all encapsulated in one experience. Ultimately, you get to carry home a memento or two, crafted by you — a splendid way to etch this memory in time!

Definitely worth it - I really enjoyed this experience. I love doing things with my hands. The teacher was there the whole time helping and showing me what to do at every step. Visiting a real pottery factory was also very interesting.

Amazing pottery class & tour in Bat Trang - We had a wonderful experience getting to spend time with Son and Hoang, and learning not only how to make our own pottery but also the rich history and culture of Bat Trang village and Hanoi. From the get-go, Son showed us incredible hospitality and struck up interesting and enriching conversation. Later in the day, Son and Hoang went above and beyond to take us to places off the beaten (tourist) path, show the pottery process start to finish, and give a glimpse into the day-to-day life and artistry of residents, potters, and painters at the village. At that point, I felt as if I were hanging out going on a walk with friends :) In summary, we learned and experienced much more than just making pottery, though the instruction on that part was also excellent and a super fun and interactive portion of the day. We got to paint and keep our handmade pottery once it was fired! I will cherish my little sunflower dish forever, which only turned out cute because Son helped me fix the ugly paint job I did at first. 😂 This was the perfect way to start our visit in Hanoi and one of the most memorable parts of our trip.

Amazing - READ ME - This was no exaggeration the coolest tour activity I have ever done. This is my 3rd time in Hanoi so I wanted to do something different from the typical Ha Long Bay excursion, city walking tour, or guided food tour. Our guide Son was incredibly knowledgeable and funny, he was the highlight of our entire trip to Hanoi. The tour starts with a lunch of your choice, we told Son we hadn't had bun cha yet and he took us to his favorite local spot which was incredible- I highly recommend you request the same! After lunch we started with actually making a pottery piece on the wheel with an instructor. Even if you have never done this before, the instruction is so good that you are guaranteed to finish at least 1 cup to later on paint and fire in the kiln. While the piece dries before painting, Son leads a wonderful factory tour showing every step of the production process and you have a chance to shop in the market. I never write lengthy reviews like this but this tour went above and beyond my expectations, for the price this is absolutely worth it and will be such a memorable experience in Hanoi guaranteed.

An incredible pottery tour! - We had an absolute blast at the pottery tour! One of our favorite experiences in Hanoi! Son walked us through the entire pottery making process, in-depth, and helped us make our very own clay bowls with the assistance of an expert artisan. Go on this tour! You won’t regret it!

Excellent pottery experience with Son and Mr H - Our pottery tour and class with Son and Mr Hoang was amazing, a real highlight of our stay in Hanoi. Great communication with Son getting everything organised in advance. Then on the day everything went smoothly and we were very well looked after. The tour of the workshops was very interesting and making pottery ourselves was incredibly enjoyable and therapeutic. The whole experience was superb and great value, I would highly recommend this experience if you are interested in pottery and want something a little different to do in Hanoi. My girlfriend and I did this and 2 of Son's cousins joined us which added to the family atmosphere. I have no doubt that kids would love this as well.

Amazing experience at Bat Trang Ceramic Village! - Son is an amazing guide and I made a new friend! This experience was one that I was looking forward to and I had an absolutely fun time! Before I arrived at Hanoi, Son such a caring host that he checked when I would be arriving and where I would be staying. He even offered food recommendations and answered all my Hanoi travel queries well! We started the day with Son picking us up from our places by car and driving us down to Bat Trang Ceramic Village (1hr+ drive). Along the drive, Son gave us an interesting insight into the Hanoi Ceramic Mosiac Mural and when we arrived at the village, we were given an insider's tour into one of the biggest pottery factories (and dragon kiln!) I've ever seen. The craftsmanship, production quality and pottery wares available were a treat (we even got to see the craftsmen at work) and next we were led to the main event - trying our hands on the wheel and making our pottery works under the supervision of Master Huang! He was a patient teacher and helped us to practice before we decide to keep our finished works. (this requires patience so make as many as you can!) While waiting for the works to dry, we were treated to a delicious lunch of Banh Cuon and Nem ran (which I would say is the most delicious Banh Cuon I ever had!) while chatting. After that, we returned to glaze our works with underglaze painting tools provided. Finally, we wrapped up the tour with shopping time at the pottery market (Chợ gốm Bát Tràng) - pls bring enough cash around 100-200k VND but you can always ask Son! Overall, I definitely enjoyed this enriching experience as a pottery hobbyist and will be looking for my Vietnamese friend Son again for his Airbnb stay + Food Tour when I return to Hanoi! Cảm ơn Son! :)”
