Fun! - We love taking tours when visiting someplace new so we can learn the history. Marc was wonderful so animated and passionate telling the story of Ghent. Highly recommend taking the tour, the city came alive with him.

Good - The trip to Ghent was cancelled as there were not enough participants. Instead they offered me the combined tour to Brugge and Ghent. Both cities in one day is too tiring, not enough time and too much information. I would still have preferred to split the tour into two

Misleading and Highly Disappointing Visit to Ghent - This is an extremely misleading and disappointing tour. The tour operator notes for this listing clearly state that this tour is limited to 15 people and that the guide language is English. I had noticed that the reviews for several similar activities to Ghent or Ghent and Bruges combined included poor ratings saying that the tours were in both English and Spanish and they were extremely distracting and not enough time was allotted for speaking in either language. I had hoped by booking this small group tour (that cost approximately $30 more than comparable tours with larger groups) that I would avoid that issue. Instead, this tour includes both English and Spanish groups on the same bus. The tour guide translates in both languages as you pass by locations on the bus. He speaks so fast and with no break between languages that you often can't understand what is being said, including important instructions of when and where to return to the bus after the walking tour and free time. When you get to Ghent, the two tours will split apart after a a very brief restroom and coffee break. This break seemed to exist only to give the guide an opportunity to locate yet additional people who would be joining our group. The English-speaking tour alone for this date was 26 people, nearly double the stated limit. When a busload of people from both tour languages unload at the same time, everyone doesn't have the chance to use the restroom or get coffee, let alone do both. As we were a group of 27 (including the guide) walking around some of the narrow streets of Ghent, not everyone could easily gather around the guide and hear what he was saying. Our group was too large for the sidewalks when we stopped to listen to the guide, and we continually had to move out of the way of cars and bikes. I requested a partial refund as this tour did not adhere to its stated limit of people or guide language. The operator rejected it and apparently lied to Viator, saying that the tour operated in accordance with how it was listed on Viator. Viator hasn't been at all helpful either. The guide included a lot of his own personal philosophy in the tour and got to speaking about current events. Some people seemed to really appreciate it. I wished he would have stuck to the topics of Ghent. Especially since he harped on the truth so much and how it's the first thing to go during war, and couldn't manage to be honest about simple things involving the tour. Also know that you absolutely need to be back to the bus at the exact time that the guide tells you (if you can even hear the instructions). We were told to be back at 4:30 and the bus left at 4:32 without two people. Our guide made a somewhat flip comment over the intercom that we were told to be back on time and that this wasn't a parking lot - they could just take the train back. If you're traveling from Brussels, I would highly recommend simply taking the train and booking a free walking tour with a tour operator in Ghent. It's more cost effective than this and you're bound to have a better experience.
