- Brussels - As you might not know Belgium is not only famous for its waffles, beers and chocolate but also for being the cradle of the 9th Art : comics. Never heard of Tintin, The Smurfs, Lucky Luke, Astérix, … ? To commemorate the link between Belgium and comics, 50ish murals have been painted throughout Brussels since the 90’s.
So together we will discover Brussels’ center throughout the visit of some of those comics murals. I will give you some explanations on them and will answer your questions if you are curious on the subject. Of course there will be many other points of attention along the way like buildings, squares, and some street art.
Don’t expect to see all the comics murals (would require all day). It’s not a historical tour, others do that better than I could. The point of this experience is to discover a part of Belgian comics culture/history and to show you -through a selection of comics murals- some streets and neighborhoods you probably would not have visited on your own…

Perhaps you’re unaware that Belgium is renowned not just for its waffles, beers and chocolate, but also as the birthplace of the 9th Art: comics, or ‘bande dessinée -BD’ as they’re called in French. Tintin, The Smurfs, Lucky Luke, Astérix - do these names ring a bell? These comics have inspired around 50 murals that have been emblazoned over Brussels’ central city since the 1990s, with a few more in the outskirts.
Join me as we roam Brussels’ city center, exploring these comic-inspired wall art. I’ll be providing brief context of each mural and satiating any queries you might have on the topic. Naturally, there will be numerous other sights to behold along our journey, including buildings, city squares, and other forms of street art. If you’re interested, I could also share my personal insights and recommendations for future visits, such as bars, restaurants, museums, and so forth.
