  • The recommendations of our tour guides: We are always eager to make sure our guests have a wonderful time while participating on our tours. Organizing private and small group tours allows us to be flexible with time and always have opportunities for breaks. Usually, we arrive to Bran around mid-day and after visiting Bran castle our guests can have some free time on the premises and nearby the castle grounds for lunch, shopping or photographing the area. In the Tea House, a small restaurant in the castle’s courtyard one can try the Funeral cake, a porridge like dessert with walnuts, raisins, rom and much more. In Romanian called Coliva the funeral cake usually is served at funerals and commemoration of deceased loved ones. It goes well with a good coffee or tea. Nearby the castle entrance a small souvenir market is located, our favorite stall is selling traditional masks and handcrafted objects and textiles. Please ask your guide to point it out to you! Our guests have the option to decide to have a proper sit-down meal or something quick on the move. The same market has food stalls, one of the most popular ones sells Romanian Hot Dogs (local sausage sandwiches) and Hanul Bran restaurant offers a large choice of tasty Romanian cuisine.

Great tour and great guide - Dan was nice and had a lot of knowledge. He was helpful and creative. It was nice having a private guide, and to not be in a huge group. He also came up with sugestions about other beautiful places in Romania

Great day full of history - We booked the full day tour with the visit to Peles. This was a fantastic day visiting three of the maim sights in the area, which are all very different showing different aspects of Transylvania's history. Our guide Charlie was extremely knowledgeable and informative about all of the sights and obviously really enjoyed sharing his knowledge. He also stopped off at the Sinaia monastery on the way so he could show us more! Charlie was great fun and very entertaining. We would recommend this as a great way to see as much of the area as possible in a day, thank you Charlie.

100% Recommend Active Travel Romania - We did three trips with Active Travel Romania (Bran+Rasnov+Peles, The private hike, Tour of Sighișoara) and every one of them was absolutely fantastic. I would highly recommend booking with this agency - Charlie in particular made our trip to Romania funny and memorable, thank you! I will forever remember how to correctly ask for a coke with lemon... Would absolutely recommend booking with these guys.

What an amazing day ! - This tour is fantastic!. We visited Bran Castle and Peles Castle, both were truly magical. I had never heard of Peles Castle before, but I can honestly say it was one of the best historical houses I have ever visited in the world. Charlie (Karoly)our guide from Active Travel was fabulous, his knowledge was brilliant. He spoke English perfectly and had a great sense of humour! I would recommend this tour.

Great tour - The tour was great, starting early enough to visit the Bran Castle as soon as it opened and with no people nor queue. Charlie was great and very nice. We visited Bran Castle and Rasnov fortress, not the Peles castle because it was closed on that day.

A must do! - I had the most wonderful time! My guide Charlie was super knowledgeable and easy to be around! Even though I was the only one who booked the tour that particular day I felt incredibly comfortable and learned so much about the castles and the local history. I would recommend this experience to everybody! It’s incredible value for the money! Thank you so much Charlie for such a lovely day! Hope to come back in the future to book one of the other tours that the company offers.

Very knowledgeable, excellent experience - My tour guide was Tiberiu. He was extremely knowledgeable, I learned a lot both about the attractions and about the local history, including my own roots (my parents left Romania at the end of Ceausescu's regime, so I had a lot of questions about the country and its ethnicities which I'm also a mix of). I opted to only go to Bran castle and Rasnov fortress, the latter of which was closed, but it was still cool to see from the outside and learn about old military strategies and history. Then we still got back to Brasov with plenty of time for me to work at my remote job :)

A Great Few Hours - It turns out I was the only person on this tour so it felt like a private tour. Charlie was very friendly, knowledgeable and knows his history. He was also happy to chat about modern life in Romania and answer my, sometime odds, questions (Why does Câmpulung look like a strange place name ?). We had to walk the final stage of the visit to Rasnov Fortress, because of snow, but this only added to the sense of adventure for me, despite my weak knee. Bran Castle is fabulous but I would have been happy to see it from the outside. In March 2024 it was bursting with tourists. In August it must be terrible. There is a faint whiff of Disneyland about the castle and the area but it's still worth seeing. I had a great few hours with Charlie and the recent snowfall made the fortress and Castle extra photogenic. I'd spotted a church on the way there that he was happy to stop at on our return. Sometimes, little bit like this make all the difference.
