The view from the dune is only part of the attraction - I highly recommend taking this half-day trip from Bordeaux to the sea coast at Arcachon to climb the Pyla sand dune. Yes there’s a hour-and-a-half drive from Bordeaux’s tourist office. But our guide, Dorian, turned that time into a wonderful education on the wines of the region. Ask him about his favorite wine movie, Sideways. ;-) The climb up the fiberglass stairs is easy enough and the dune offers a beautiful view of the ocean. BTW, it’s best to be barefoot. A glass of wine on the summit followed by about 20 minutes to take pictures iOS followed by the descent, and running is very easy. A quick 20-minute ride to the picturesque oyster farming company’s water-side tasting center ends with oysters or shrimp and a glass of wine. All of this was capably overseen by Dorian, who is well-versed in the region’s history, viticulture and is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Disappointing, itinerary changed and we were not told - Pros: left on time, Arcachon Dune was amazing. Cons: We booked this specific tour 3 months in advance, at that time it was supposed to include a visit to an oyster farm to view the production process. This was one of the main reasons we picked the tour. We were only taken to a muddy shoreline restaurant, where the currently advertised oysters or shrimp were served. When we asked the guide why we were not going to the oyster farm as promised, he mumbled something vague about the area being too far out. What?! Then, the entire ride back to the city, he conversed 100% in French to the front seat passengers. Really? That was a solid hour of the tour where he might have pointed out what we were passing by. The English speakers got the short end of that deal. My partner and I were supposed to be given a lunch at the tour company office, and were the only 2 persons from the morning that had also booked an afternoon tour. We were taken to the office, where we observed the company staff having a nice sit down lunch together. But not us! We were handed a basket with 2 sandwiches and told to walk 4 blocks down the street to eat our sandwich in a public park. By the time we walked to the park and wolfed down the basic baguette sandwiches, we had to hustle back to meet the afternoon tour group. It was even more confusing since the spot where we were let off in front of the tour company was 2 blocks away in a different direction from where the tour van was loading the afternoon group. We barely made it. Altogether a very unpleasant experience.
