Highlights
  • Bolzano - Begin your exploration at the Bolzano Concentration Camp site and its perimeter wall, one of Italy’s four such camps and the sole one associated with forced labor camps. From mid-1944 to April 1945, it was a place of imprisonment for approximately 11,000 individuals, including men, women, and children.
  • Bolzano - Proceed to the railway tracks (‘Die Transporte’), the departure point for 13 train carriages transporting prisoners to the trans-alpine concentration camps of Dachau, Mathausen, Flossenbürg, Ravensbruck, and Auschwitz. Next, visit the City Cemetery’s Jewish section to pay respects at the memorial for the 96 Jewish citizens of South Tyrol who were deported by the Nazis and died in the local camp. Before heading to the historical center, make a final stop at the memorial dedicated to forced labor, located near the Virgolo Gallery, a former significant ball bearings arms factory where camp detainees were forced to work.
  • Piazza Walther - Take a guided stroll through the medieval core of Bolzano, where you’ll discover the city’s historical role as a major trading hub on the Transalpine Augsburg-Venice route and its Jewish community that dates back to the 14th century. As you walk, your guide will highlight the ‘Stolpesteine’ - brass plates set into the pavement, each bearing the name and life dates of a Bolzano Jewish resident who fell victim to Nazi oppression. The tour concludes at Café Mozart.
