Additional Information

We’ll begin with a concise overview of the geographical and cultural roots of this music, displaying some of its diverse rhythms such as Bunde, Currulao, Rumba, and Juga and more. Our musical odyssey will traverse the instruments indigenous to the rural Pacific Coast towns of Colombia. These time-honored instruments encompass the Marimba de Chonta, the Cununos and Bombos, the Guasá, and the Voices. We will illustrate how the captivating tones of each instrument weave an intricate polyrhythmic tapestry when they unite in harmony. You do not need to have any musical expertise as we will investigate these rhythms in an enjoyable and accessible group setting.

Additionally, we will have the chance to savor some delectable touches of the Pacific, prepared by the skilled hands of a local chef. The freshness of the ocean and the sugary richness of viche, a local sugar cane spirit, will accompany the music in transporting us to the Pacific Coast, making this an unparalleled sensory feast!

Really informative and accessible! - This was such a treat! I really enjoyed not only learning about but also getting to try Afro-Colombian music. I'm a professional musician and Adrian adjusted what he was teaching to keep me on my toes. And the booze was great!

Enchanting experience of traditional music and traditions from the pacific coast of Colombia - Adrian Sabogal and the various masters he invites from the Pacific coast inspire participants to find the rhythm from within. By creating a circular call and response workshop all participants are able to play every single instrument while singing and learning about the traditions of this African Diasporic culture. You enter the workshop thinking you are going to learn how to play an instrument and you leave the workshop completely immerse in the culture and transformed from the inside out with these magical rhythms. I highly recommend anyone, even non musicians, to experience Marimbea and let yourself be transformed too!!

Perfect musical and cultural experience - Adrian provides a truly amazing and unique experience. He is very attentive and communicative. It is not only about music but I also learned about Adrian's background and source of passion as well as about history of Afrocolombians with delicious snacks and drinks. You can be as tonedeff as I am and still participate and play some cool music.

A rare opportunity to study with the masters - Adrian Sabogal is one of the most compassionate, gifted teachers that I have had the honor to learn from. His approach is very natural, and builds community at its core. How the workshop works: You are arranged in a circle, and everyone rotates from instrument to instrument, learning the corresponding rhythms to each instrument as you go around. It is an experience to not only learn, but to share what your learning with the person next to you, which is brilliant. When you teach, it solidifies what you have been learning- so you're simultaneously learning and providing an example for the next person to take the place of your instrument. Adrian helps to make the music of Colombia's Pacific Coast more accessible. He does this by teaching the basic rhythms of the styles of music that are common from these regions. Most of the time, he is accompanied with the help of a master musician. In this practice, he is providing an opportunity for these musicians, as well as an opportunity for the folks taking the workshop. I have been able to meet and study with Ali Cuama, Baudilio Cuama, and Diego Obregon through these experiences- all multi-instrumentalists from Colombia's Pacific Coast, with their primary instrument being the marimba. Adrian helps bring awareness to some of the challenges people from the region face, and sets a good example of how to be respectful to this sacred, well kept culture and their music. The experience is dynamic enough that you don't have to be a musician to be a part of the circle. I appreciate how this music is very inclusive. There is a role for everyone to play. If you are a more advanced or previously trained musician, there is also something to learn that will challenge you. Watching how Adrian can make these adjustments in real time is proof of his versatility and degree of his teaching. I can't recommend this experience enough, if whether you are interested in the music, if you have never even heard of the music (most of the world hasn't), or if you don't even know how to clap in time! Come prepared to learn, get out of your comfort zone, and with patience and work develop an appreciation and connection for this wonderful music and culture.
