• Mahabodhi Temple - Situated 115 km south of Bihar’s capital, Patna, and 16 km from Gaya’s district headquarters, the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya is one of the four sacred sites associated with Lord Buddha’s life, particularly his Enlightenment. This site contains the most significant remnants from the 5th-6th century A.D. in the Indian subcontinent. Spanning an area of 4.8600 hectares, the Mahabodhi Temple Complex was initially constructed by Emperor Asoka in the 3rd century B.C., with the current structure dating back to the 5th–6th centuries. It is one of the earliest brick-built Buddhist temples from the late Gupta period, significantly influencing brick architecture over time. The complex includes the grand 50-meter high Temple and the Vajrasana.

• Great Buddha Statue - Known as the 80’ Buddha Statue, the Great Buddha Statue was unveiled on November 18, 1989, in a ceremony attended by His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama, who blessed the 25-meter statue. It is the first significant Buddha statue constructed in modern India, located next to the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya. Under the motto “Spread Buddha’s rays to the Whole World,” Daijokyo dedicated seven years to its construction. The statue is a symbol of Bodhgaya, attracting pilgrims globally, and is affectionately called ‘The 80-foot Buddha Statue’ by locals.

• Pragbodhi Cave - Also known as Mahakala Cave (Dungeshwari Cave), this significant spiritual and historical site near Bodhgaya is where Lord Buddha meditated for approximately six years, practicing extreme austerity before achieving enlightenment. Inside, a “starving Buddha” statue depicts his state during intense penance, where he conceived the “Middle Path” concept, balancing extremes.
• Sujata Kuti - “Sujata Kutir” (Sujata’s hut) holds historical importance in Buddhism. It is believed that Sujata, a village girl, offered kheer (milk-rice) to Lord Buddha here, located in Bakraur village across the Falgu (Niranjana) River from Bodh Gaya. This act helped Buddha end his extreme fasting and embrace the Middle Path, leading to enlightenment.
