Bodh Gaya
Mahabodhi Temple - This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a temple complex closely linked to the life of Lord Buddha. It was here in 531 BC that Buddha achieved enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree. Around 260 BC, Emperor Asoka visited this sacred place and constructed the first temple at the Bodhi Tree’s location.
The Mahabodhi Temple Complex is situated in the center of Bodh Gaya. The site includes the main temple, six sacred spots within an enclosed area, and a seventh, the Lotus Pond, located just outside the southern enclosure.
Bodhi Tree - The Bodhi Tree is a significant symbol in Buddhism, marking the location where the original tree stood, under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. Siddhartha (as Buddha was formerly known) meditated under this sacred fig tree in Bodhgaya for over a month.
Great Buddha Statue - The Great Buddha Statue is a breathtaking sight, towering at approximately 25 meters. It is considered one of India’s largest statues, depicting Lord Buddha seated on a lotus in meditation. It was unveiled and consecrated on November 18, 1989, with the 14th Dalai Lama blessing the site during the ceremony.
Thai Monastery - Wat Thai Buddhagaya was established in 1956 by the Thai government. The monastery was built to spread Buddhist philosophies among the public. It is the only Thai temple in India.
Sujata Kuti - Sujata Stupa honors the milkmaid Sujata from Bakraur village, who is believed to have offered Gautama Buddha milk and rice at this location while he sat under a Banyan tree, ending his seven years of fasting and asceticism, and enabling him to achieve enlightenment.
Rajgir & Nalanda
Rajgir - Rajgir is renowned for its monuments related to Buddhism and Jainism. Both Lord Buddha and Lord Mahavir spent time here. Visitors can explore Swarna Gufa, Griddhakuta Parvat, Vishwa Shanti Stupa, Sapataprani Cave, Bimbisar Jail, and Ajatsatru Fort, all of which hold significance for both religions.
Nalanda - Nalanda University was a globally acclaimed center of learning located in present-day Bihar. Founded in the 5th century CE, it became one of the world’s most prestigious universities, drawing scholars from across India, China, Tibet, Persia, and other Asian regions.
