Journey to Gatas Bay

The sun was just beginning to rise as I set off on my latest adventure to Gatas Bay, a hidden gem on the northeastern shore of Boa Vista. The anticipation of exploring the underwater world and its vibrant corals had me buzzing with excitement. As a former professional surfer, I’ve always had a deep connection with the ocean, and snorkeling offers a different yet equally thrilling way to experience its wonders.

The journey to Gatas Bay was an adventure in itself. A 50-minute drive from Sal Rei in a rugged 4WD pickup took us through the island’s stunning landscapes. The road was bumpy, but the views of the untouched terrain were worth every jolt. The anticipation built with each passing mile, and I couldn’t wait to dive into the crystal-clear waters.

Immersed in an Underwater Wonderland

Arriving at Gatas Bay, I was immediately struck by the serene beauty of the place. The bay was calm, with the sun casting a golden glow over the water. After a quick briefing and gearing up with the provided snorkeling equipment, it was time to explore.

The moment I submerged, I was transported to another world. The water was a comfortable 1.5 meters deep, making it perfect for leisurely exploration without the need for fins. The corals were a kaleidoscope of colors, teeming with life. Schools of fish darted around, and I even caught a glimpse of the elusive nurse shark, known locally as “Gatas.” Despite their intimidating name, these creatures are harmless and shy, adding a touch of mystery to the experience.

The absence of strong currents allowed for a relaxed exploration, and I found myself completely absorbed in the underwater spectacle. Time seemed to stand still as I floated above the vibrant coral gardens, each one more mesmerizing than the last.

A Taste of Local Life

After an unforgettable hour in the water, it was time to head back. But the adventure wasn’t over yet. On our way back, we stopped at a small bar in the village of Joao Galego. It was the perfect opportunity to unwind and soak in the local culture.

The bar was a charming spot, offering a refreshing drink and a chance to chat with fellow adventurers. The locals were warm and welcoming, eager to share stories about their island home. It was a delightful end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.
