Aloha, Big Island!

When the opportunity arose to explore the natural wonders of Hawaii’s Big Island, I knew it was a chance I couldn’t pass up. As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for experiences that offer both adventure and education, and the Kilauea Volcano Tour seemed to promise just that. Our day began with an early morning flight from Maui to Honolulu, followed by a second hop to Kona. Next, we headed to Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, a striking landscape where we were lucky enough to spot several Hawaiian green sea turtles basking in the sun. It was a magical moment that my kids are still talking about!

A visit to the Punaluʻu Bake Shop was next on the agenda, where we savored delicious malasadas and picked up sandwiches for a picnic later in the day. The bakery’s sweet bread, offered in flavors like taro and guava, was a hit with the whole family. It’s these little stops that make a trip memorable, adding a touch of local flavor to the experience.

The Heart of the Adventure: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

The highlight of our day was undoubtedly the exploration of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. We hiked along a volcanic crater, a surreal experience that offered breathtaking views and a sense of the island’s raw power. Jim’s personal telescope allowed us to witness the bubbling lava of Kīlauea, a sight that left us all in awe.

Walking through a massive lava tube was another unforgettable experience, giving us a tangible sense of the island’s volcanic history. The park’s visitor center and gift shops provided additional insights and souvenirs to remember our adventure by.

Our day concluded with a visit to Hilo, where we explored Big Island Candies and marveled at the beauty of Rainbow Falls. These stops were the perfect way to round out an already full itinerary, offering a glimpse into the island’s vibrant culture and natural beauty.

As we boarded our return flights, I reflected on the day’s adventures. It was the longest excursion we’ve ever done, but also one of the most rewarding.
