Exploring Hawaii’s Fiery Heart: A Day on the Big Island
When I heard about the Kilauea Volcano Tour, I knew it was a must-do for my next family travel adventure. Join me as I recount an unforgettable day exploring Hawaii’s natural wonders, from coffee farms to volcanic craters.
Aloha, Big Island!
When the opportunity arose to explore the natural wonders of Hawaii’s Big Island, I knew it was a chance I couldn’t pass up. As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for experiences that offer both adventure and education, and the Kilauea Volcano Tour seemed to promise just that. Our day began with an early morning flight from Maui to Honolulu, followed by a second hop to Kona. The logistics were handled seamlessly, making what could have been a daunting itinerary feel like a breeze.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by our guide, Jim C, whose infectious energy set the tone for the day. Traveling with a small group of 11 in a comfortable, air-conditioned van, we embarked on an 11-hour journey that was as engaging as it was educational. Jim’s storytelling brought the island’s history and geology to life, making each stop along the way feel like a chapter in a captivating book.
Coffee, Turtles, and Sweet Treats
Our first stop was Greenwell Farms, where we learned about the rich history of Kona coffee. The aroma of freshly roasted beans was intoxicating, and I couldn’t resist picking up a bag to take home. Next, we visited the stunning Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach. The sight of green sea turtles basking on the shore was a highlight for my inner child and a magical moment for any nature lover.
A visit to the Punaluʻu Bake Shop was a delightful treat. Known as the southernmost bakery in the U.S., it offered a variety of delicious malasadas and sandwiches, perfect for our picnic later in the day. The kids would have loved the sweet bread, and I made a mental note to bring them along next time.
The Majesty of Volcanoes National Park
The crown jewel of the tour was undoubtedly Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Walking through the park, we were treated to breathtaking views of volcanic craters and lush rainforests. Jim’s personal telescope allowed us to witness the bubbling lava of Kīlauea, a sight that left us all in awe. The experience of walking through a massive lava tube was both humbling and exhilarating, offering a tangible connection to the island’s fiery origins.
Additional stops in Hilo, including visits to Big Island Candies and Rainbow Falls, rounded out the day perfectly. Each location added a unique flavor to the tour, making it a comprehensive exploration of the island’s diverse landscapes and cultures. As we boarded our return flights, I reflected on the day’s adventures, grateful for the memories and eager to share them with my family on our next Hawaiian adventure.
