• Kohala Coast - The Kohala Mountains, the oldest of the five volcanoes forming the Big Island of Hawai‘i, are situated at the island’s northernmost point. These mountains, which emerged over a million years ago, last erupted approximately 120,000 years ago and are now classified as extinct. Erosion has significantly transformed the landscape into deep, verdant valleys and steep, rugged cliffs, particularly on the windward (northeastern) side, where plentiful rainfall nurtures dense cloud forests and rich biodiversity. Conversely, the leeward (western) slopes are considerably drier due to the rain shadow effect. Ascending to about 5,480 feet, this mountain range is an essential watershed, supplying numerous streams and rivers that journey through the terrain to the ocean. Kohala is culturally significant as the birthplace of King Kamehameha I, who unified the Hawaiian Islands.
