Eater/Explorer

My travel cravings are for inspired meals, interesting conversations, old homes, long mountain walks along impossibly picturesque streams, and, of course, gorgeous beaches. My earliest travel memory is running through peach trees at my grandmother’s farm in Italy. My perfect day would be spending time on the stunning Big Island with my husband. I’m somehow always surprised that a place so remote and so different is part of the United States. Americans really lucked out on this one. While on the Big Island I would stay at: Ala Kai Bed & Breakfast in Hilo and Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows in Kona.

My favorite places to eat
1. Da Poke Shack: For fresh poke, the local specialty.
2. Miyo's: for delicious Japanese.
3. The Hilo Farmers Market: for fresh fruit to snack on at the beach.

The places you should definitely see
1. Beaches and more beaches!
2. Volcanoes National Park: Come prepared to hike.
3. Waipi'o Valley: A stunning tropical valley that drops down 800 vertical feet to beautiful black sand beaches.
4. Mauna Kea: The highest peak in the state of Hawaii at 13,796 ft. Make sure to take in a sunset from the peak – but pack layers, it gets cold up there!
5. A coffee plantation in Kona: Don’t you want to know where your morning addiction comes from?
My hidden gems
1. Champagne Pond in Kapoho: It’s a little tricky to find, but it’s so worth it.
2. The many hidden beaches behind the black lava fields: They’re not actually hidden, but certainly feel that way.
3. Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden: It is simply stunning.

My travel tips

1. A destination can feel like a travel cliché, but that doesn't mean it's not totally awesome.
2. This is nature at its best. Give into it.

The place I'm most excited to go to next is Korea!
