Highlights
  • 78-7130 Kaleiopapa St - Come aboard the Pueo Kai 2, and enjoy a small-group manta ray snorkeling experience with up to 12 passengers. Snorkeling with Kona’s famous manta rays is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that The Travel Channel called “one of the top 10 things to do in your lifetime.”

After a quick 5-minute boat ride, we’ll arrive at the aptly named “Manta Village.”

You’ll enter the water as Kona’s famous manta rays feed on plankton accumulating under our light boards. The manta rays may fly by our light boards as they feast on plankton, and they may even hang around and do “barrel rolls” beneath us, as they come back for more and more plankton. Every night is different.

After 30-45 minutes in the water, depending on sea conditions and manta ray feeding behavior, you will be guided back to the boat.

We see manta rays about 92% of the time. While we expect to see them every night, manta rays are wild animals and they do take nights off from Manta Village about 8% of the time. If this happens, we will offer you a free trip on any available charter. Since our tours typically sell out several days in advance, we recommend you book this tour as early as possible during your stay on Hawaii Island.

Additional Information

Steer clear of the crowded ‘herd boats’ in Kona and partake in a personal manta ray snorkeling adventure that accommodates no more than 12 people.

We kick off our journey from the Keahou Harbor in South Kona, followed by an breezy 5-minute boat trip to Manta Village, our snorkeling spot.

Your captain and snorkel guide will enlighten you about the famous manta rays of Kona and will talk about our respectful and ethical contact with these serene sea creatures.

Once you’ve dived in, you’ll grasp our illuminated board, with your feet supported by floaties, witnessing the manta rays elegantly dance underneath you. The manta rays feed on plankton which typically congregates at the surface just as the sun sets, and then clusters beneath our lights. This gives you the chance to spend a memorable evening on the water, mesmerized by the sight of manta rays swirling and whirling for your benefit.

Being a Green Listed company, we are very conscientious about our interaction with the manta rays and take great care to ensure we’re not harming the environment.

  • Must be able to swim without the assistance of a floatation device.
  • A ticket is required for all passengers, regardless of age or whether they are entering the water.
  • Maximum weight of 280 pounds per traveler.
  • Not recommended for travelers with neck problems.

Fantastic Manta Ray Experience - This tour was perfect. I had a hard time choosing between times, as some sounded earlier than I wanted and done too late. Ours was around 7:30 and it was perfect. Maianna was very welcoming and informative from the start and any nerves I had were instantly gone. Shawn, Ake, and Teyvin were great as well. They were all very passionate about the manta rays and did everything they could to ensure we got to see some. They moved us around and even brought us up to another crew to make sure. My boyfriend and I saw many manta rays all of which were incredible to watch and so big! The experience was amazing and I’d recommend this crew e wry tine for a wonderful time and dedicated crew, both to protecting the manta rats and to ensuring a quality experience.

Unbelievable! - We booked this tour after seeing it was one of the top 3 things to do on the big island --- and it well exceeded our expectations! Our guide was so informative about manta rays in general all throughout our viewing. We rented a go pro as part of our reservation and are so glad we did so. These are enormous creatures and were right up next to us. Such an amazing experience!

Epic manta moments - Our experience with Manta Magic was exceptional! The crew was amazing and informative. Our boat trip was quick and soon we were holding on to the light board where a record amount of mantas put on a show right under the surface- so close!! Highly recommend!

Go with Oceanic for a great experience! - Amazing experience! The staff are super knowledgeable and friendly. Melissa, Daryl, and Aukie (not sure how to spell it) and their other team mate were great! Super calm and made us feel comfortable with the Manta Rays. They respect the animals and want to share their knowledge so you do too. This company had many bonuses that we noticed others did not. They provide ankle floatees to help keep your feet off the rays. (We noticed another group did not have them and the swimmers’ feet were all in the way - which is not safe for the rays). We had 3 Rays visit and they all had names. They get super close and glide through the water showing off their moves. Super amazing. Went for the early trip and enjoyed the sunset from the water! This group was the best to go with as we had one board with people attached. Other companies had multiple boards and way too many people in the water (which was a bit too much). We liked the personal group that Oceanic provided.

Best tour experience in Hawaii I have ever had and it’s not even close! - Lexy, Justin, Sara and Molly were our guides on this surreal, incredible experience. They made it impossibly simple for all of us and I can’t wait to come back. Lexy even minded my phone when I was so entranced by the moment I forgot it as I was leaving! Thank goodness because I was able to capture this image, along with videos. Justin was even wise enough to guide my own iPhone on features I didn’t know were there. Oh and they had a cute dog on their boat. Just perfect. Thank you and I highly recommend Hawaii Oceanic to chaperone this unique event…don't miss it!

Manta Ray Night Ballet - We had an amazing snorkel with the manta rays. Crew was Lexy, Justin, Akea, Karla, and David. They were attentive and accommodating. They encouraged questions and were very knowledgeable. It was a short ride to the site and a short swim to the board. Words cannot describe the manta ray ballet that went on underneath us! It was magic!Would definitely do it again and wouldn’t hesitate to use this company. Very professional and they also have Go Pros you can rent. It was perfect!

14 manta rays! But... - On the HUGE plus side, we saw 14 manta rays!!! On the negative side, pretty much everything else. (With the exception of the young lady who checked us in, Marianna, she was great.) I went on Monday, April 1. The boat was small and rocked horribly in the waves, but none of the 3 staff in board gave any assistance as people were trying to walk to the bench seats. They only had 1 adult sized life vest, and 2 people wanted it, so they had to figure out who needed it more between them. The ankle floats had very old Velcro and some wouldn't stay closed. No sodas or snacks were offered at any time, though there was a small bucket of sodas on board and a small basket of individual bags of chips (and a few single serving packs of Oreos cookies) at the check-in van. The captain, Jason, looked and sounded like he'd rather be doing anything else. Totally bored and checked out. Eric, the guy in the water with us, shared some interesting things about mantas but he was at the other end of the float and I couldn't hear him much on my end. There were only short sleeve wetsuit jackets available, not long sleeve, pants or full suits. And it was a very short, fast trip - 5 minutes to the site, they shoved us out the back of the boat like cattle, 30 minutes in the water, and back on board to go to the dock. This was the lowest budget, most bare bones excursion I've taken in my 3 visits to the Kailua Kona area by far, and yet it very much was not a cheap trip. At $145 each person it was on the higher end of the manta ray snorkel trips. If it weren't that we had more and more mantas join the zooplankton buffet, starting with one gigantic female from minute 1 and new ones joining every couple of minutes, I couldn't recommend this at all. But if you're just wanting to see mantas and don't care about customer service, then I'd say this is the trip for you. I'd talked to a woman a couple of days earlier who had seen 16 mantas on this Hawaii Oceanic/Manta Magic tour, which is why I booked with them, but after experiencing great vibes with Fairwinds, Sea Quest, and Body Glove earlier in our vacation, maybe I was just spoiled with their levels of guest service. But it really felt like they just didn't care about the customers at all on this boat. But hey, mantas galore! 2 stars for them.
