Highlights
  • Kealakekua Bay - Snorkel at Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park, the site of the Captain Cook Monument on The Big Island of Hawaii, in a small-group experience.

Kealakekua Bay is a protected marine sanctuary, boasting arguably the best snorkeling in the entire state of Hawaii. Due to the state’s environmental protections, Kealakekua Bay boasts an abundance of marine life that includes Nai’a (Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins), Caluiflower Coral, Yellow Tang fish, pencil urchin, and dozens of other marine species that call the bay home.

Your tour will include a maximim of 12 passengers, which is a more private experience than the “cattle boats” in Kona that carry 100 passengers or more. By being part of a smaller group, it’s quicker for the group to enter and exit the boat, which allows for more time snorkeling on the beautiful coral reef.

On our way to and from Kealakekua Bay, our Captain and crew will point out historically and culturally significant areas of the Kona coast. We often see Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins, and humpback whales (during the winter) on this tour!

Additional Information

We embark on a journey from Keauhou Harbor into the pristine azure seas. As we set sail, our crew highlights captivating sights along the historically rich Kona coastline. South Kona is home to an array of significant Hawaiian Heritage landmarks, brimming with mana (spiritual power). We remain in proximity to the Kona coast as we navigate southwards towards Kealakekua Bay, keeping a keen eye on noteworthy marine creatures.

We might pause to marvel at the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins (Stenella longirostris) performing. These dolphins tend to rest near the shore during the day, and occasionally engage with the boat, surfing our bow wave and frolicking in our wake.

After a swift display by the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins, Humpback whales, and other fascinating features we come across en route, we reach the globally renowned Kealakekua Bay, the location of Captain James Cook’s monument.

Following an hour and a half of snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay, we begin our return to the harbor.

Great snorkeling on this trip - We had an amazing time on our snorkeling adventure. We went on the 8 am trip, it was less crowded. The crew took really good care of us and we had a 10 year old and 8 year old on board. It was the best!

Great small group experience - Allen and Dustin were absolutely amazing! We misread our itinerary and we were running late. They were patient, kind and so friendly. Great snorkeling experience without a large crowd. We would book this trip again and again!

Very pleasant small group snorkeling experience with Hawaiian Oceanic - We had a great time with the small group experience on the snorkel outing to the Captain Cook monument underwater park. Carmel our snorkeling guide and Cory our captain did a great job explaining and entertaining when they needed to and otherwise stay out of the way. Their smaller (but not small!) boat seemed to get us there a bit earlier in the day, as the location eventually gets a bit overrun with other snorkeling parties. Just when we got there we noticed down dolphins playing in the water around the boat, which of course delighted us and made us get in the water a bit later. Swimming with the dolphins is no longer permitted but watching them is! The reef and coral area is nice and easy to swim with plenty of fish to see. Just when we boarded back onto the boat a manta ray was swimming deep underneath the boat as a stylish finish. On the return trip they sprinkle in a few stops along the coast to explain rock formations and related Hawaiian tales…a nice touch of culture. Overall a nice short (3 h) trip which we finished off with a nice lunch in nearby Kona.

Best snorkeling on the island and first boat to arrive!! - We had a wonderful experience with Hawaii Oceanic, on April 22, 2024, our Captain and crew were friendly, helpful, funny and very knowledgeable. The Captain took us out and we searched for dolphins and whales on our way to Kealakekua Bay, the trip was gorgeous. When we arrived WE WERE THE FIRST BOAT THERE, so we had it all to ourselves for about half an hour! They gave great instructions and really encouraged us to go slow and how to look for octopi, etc... I want to add that to anyone who says it's a dead reef... with no life. Their eyes were closed. We've snorkeled in top places all over the world and yes, there's been a decline in reefs everywhere, BUT HAWAII is the only place that we've seen NEW CORAL GROWING back!!!! The water clarity in Kealakekua Bay was crystal clear, SO many fish, eels, coral, etc, etc... we could not have asked for more! Also we got to go at our own pace (we stayed out a bit longer than others) and were served fresh pineapple, chips and drinks when we got back onboard. Then we got to hang around sleeping dolphins and stopped at several historical locations on the way back to the harbor. Well worth the money and highly recommended!!!
