From Waves to Lava: A Surfer’s Journey on the Big Island
Trading surfboards for hiking boots, my wife and I embarked on a thrilling adventure on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Join us as we explore volcanic landscapes and cascading waterfalls, culminating in a breathtaking volcanic eruption.
Aloha, Big Island!
As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours chasing waves and exploring the sun-drenched beaches of Central America. But this time, my wife and I decided to trade the surfboards for hiking boots and embark on a different kind of adventure. We found ourselves on the Big Island of Hawai’i, ready to experience the Hilo Volcano and Waterfall Tour.
Our guide, Shawn, picked us up from our hotel, and we immediately felt the laid-back island vibe. The day was ours to customize, and Shawn was more than accommodating. Our first stop was the Wailuku River State Park, where we marveled at the Rainbow Falls. The mist from the falls created a vibrant rainbow, a sight that felt like a warm welcome from the island itself. Just a mile away, the Boiling Pots intrigued us with their unique lava formations. It was a perfect start to our day, and I couldn’t help but feel the same thrill I get when catching the perfect wave.
The Heart of the Island
After a leisurely lunch, we made our way to the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. As someone who thrives on the unpredictability of the ocean, the idea of witnessing an active volcano was exhilarating. Shawn’s knowledge of the island’s flora, fauna, and volcanic history was impressive. He shared stories of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire, as we walked along the rim of the Halema‘uma‘u Crater.
The park was a treasure trove of natural wonders. We explored the Thurston Lava Tube, a massive tunnel formed by ancient lava flows. The lush rainforest surrounding the tube was a stark contrast to the barren volcanic landscape, reminding me of the diverse ecosystems I’ve encountered in my travels. As we continued our journey, the anticipation of witnessing an eruption grew.
A Dinner to Remember
As the sun began to set, Shawn had a surprise for us. He had reserved a table at the Volcano House, a restaurant with a view of the volcano. Just as we sat down, the volcano began to erupt. It was a slow start, but soon, a fountain of lava shot 600 feet into the air. We watched in awe as we enjoyed our dinner, the fiery display illuminating the night sky.
After dinner, Shawn took us to another vantage point to witness the eruption. The sight was surreal, a reminder of nature’s raw power and beauty. Shawn had thought of everything, from snacks to warm jackets and headlamps for the evening. He even captured the day’s magic in photos, allowing us to relive the experience long after we left the island.
This adventure was a departure from my usual surf trips, but it was no less thrilling. The Big Island’s volcanic landscapes and cascading waterfalls offered a different kind of beauty, one that I was grateful to have experienced. If you’re ever on the Big Island, I highly recommend the Hilo Volcano and Waterfall Tour. It’s a day of wonder and discovery, a perfect complement to the island’s legendary surf.
