Aloha, Big Island!

As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for experiences that are both educational and fun for the whole family. So when I heard about the Big Island Adventure, I knew it was a must-do for our next family trip. My husband and I decided to take the plunge and explore Hawaii’s largest island without the hassle of a rental car. And let me tell you, it was the best decision we could have made!

Our adventure began with a warm welcome from our tour guide, Dreu, who picked us up right from our hotel. With only eight people on the tour, it felt like a private excursion, and Dreu’s personal touch made it all the more special. As a planner, it was a relief to let someone else take the reins for a change. We were free to soak in the sights and sounds of the island without worrying about logistics.

The day kicked off with a visit to a Kona coffee farm, where we learned about the harvesting and milling process while sipping on some of the best coffee I’ve ever tasted. We even indulged in some delicious malasadas, a local treat that my kids couldn’t get enough of. And that was just the beginning!

Volcanoes and Legends

The highlight of our morning was undoubtedly the visit to the Punalu’u Black Sand Beach. The sight of green sea turtles basking on the shore was a magical experience that left us all in awe. Dreu’s knowledge of Hawaiian legends and cultural facts added depth to our understanding of the island’s rich history.

After a satisfying lunch, we headed to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The park’s steam vents, craters, and lava tubes were a sight to behold, and Dreu’s explanations of the geological wonders made the experience even more enriching. My kids were fascinated by the idea of walking on a volcano, and I was thrilled to see them so engaged.

As we drove around the island, Dreu pointed out the different volcanoes we were passing, each with its own story and significance. It was a unique way to learn about the island’s natural history, and I found myself hanging on to every word.

Waterfalls and Waipi’o Valley

The afternoon took us to the lush east side of the island, where we explored the stunning Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls State Park. The drive to Hilo was filled with captivating stories of the Big Island’s history, and I was on the edge of my seat, eager to hear what happened next.

The views from the Waipi’o Valley lookout were breathtaking, with dramatic cliffs dropping into the sparkling blue ocean. It was a perfect spot for family photos, and we took full advantage of the opportunity.

As the day came to a close, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the incredible experience we had. The Big Island Adventure was more than just a tour; it was a journey through the heart and soul of Hawaii.
