Cosmic Adventures: Stargazing on Mauna Kea’s Majestic Heights
When the allure of the cosmos calls, there’s no resisting. Drawn by the promise of stargazing under one of the clearest skies on Earth, I embarked on the Maunakea Star Tour, eager to explore the universe from the heights of Hawaii’s majestic mountains.
A Cosmic Prelude: Coffee and BBQ Under the Hawaiian Sun
The adventure began with a pick-up from our accommodation, and we were whisked away to a coffee farm owned by Doutour, a Japanese company. As someone who thrives on adrenaline, the idea of a coffee farm might seem tame, but the experience was anything but. Walking through the lush gardens, surrounded by the chirping of little birds, the sight of wild turkeys, and the occasional mongoose darting by, was a sensory delight. The farm staff offered us a free coffee tasting, and despite not having touched coffee in 30 years, I couldn’t resist. The rich aroma and robust flavor were a perfect prelude to the evening’s adventures.
After the coffee experience, we gathered in an outdoor reception area for an early BBQ dinner. The setting sun painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, a perfect backdrop for the feast. The anticipation of what lay ahead was palpable, and as we finished our meal, we had the chance to look at the sun through a specially filtered scope. It was a surreal experience, watching the fiery orb through the lens, a reminder of the vastness of the universe we were about to explore.
Ascending the Heights: Sunset and Stargazing on Mauna Kea
With our bellies full and spirits high, we embarked on a journey up Old Saddle Road. The drive was an adventure in itself, with our guide, Todd, sharing fascinating insights into the volcanology, geology, and history of the towering Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. As we ascended, the landscape transformed, and we stopped at a vantage point to watch the sunset. The view was breathtaking, the sun dipping below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the rugged terrain.
The real magic began as we continued our ascent to find the perfect stargazing spot. The night sky unfolded above us, a canvas of twinkling stars. Todd and his colleague, whose name escapes me, were our stellar guides, their knowledge of the night sky and Hawaiian geology adding depth to the experience. We marveled at Jupiter and its four big moons, and Saturn with its iconic rings. Despite the full moon, which limited some of the celestial sights, there was no shortage of wonders to behold. With only three of us on the tour, we had ample time to gaze at each object, the telescope bringing the distant worlds into sharp focus.
Celestial Finale: The Full Moon’s Embrace
The night culminated in a mesmerizing view of the full moon. Its luminous glow bathed the landscape in a silvery light, a fitting finale to an unforgettable evening. The temperature had dropped to a chilly 10 degrees Celsius, but the provided warm jackets and blankets kept us cozy. As someone who has faced the elements in extreme sports, the cold was a familiar companion, adding to the thrill of the experience.
Reflecting on the Maunakea Star Tour, it was a journey that transcended the ordinary, a cosmic adventure that ignited the imagination and stirred the soul. The combination of knowledgeable guides, breathtaking views, and the sheer wonder of the universe made it an experience that will linger in my memory. For those seeking a unique blend of adventure and discovery, this tour is a must-do on the Big Island.
