Here, visit the Glanni waterfall, which exudes a mythical aura, often seen as the boundary between the human and divine realms. The waterfall cascades in multiple steps over the ancient lava fields of Grábrókarhraun. While admiring Glanni, enjoy a clear view of the three Grábrók volcanic craters towering over the fields.
-
Deildartunguhver Thermal Spring - Deildartunguhver is the first attraction on the tour - the most powerful hot spring in Europe, providing hot water and energy to locals for miles. After exploring the steaming vapors at Deildartunguhver, proceed to Hraunfossar, also known as the “Lava Waterfalls.”
-
Sturlureykir Horses/Visiting Horse Farm - Experience an unforgettable visit to the Sturlureykir Icelandic horse farm. Get up close to these beautiful, friendly animals and enjoy homemade “hot spring bread,” known as rugbraud in Icelandic, with a nice cup of coffee or ice-cold water.
-
Reykholt - The final stop is Reykholt, once the medieval home of Snorri Sturluson, a renowned Icelandic historian and chieftain. Discover Snorralaug (Snorri’s Pool), a traditional natural hot spring where locals have bathed since the 12th century. From there, return to the capital city after a day of wonder and exploration in the wilds of West Iceland.
-
Hraunfossar - Hraunfossar is a majestic waterfall stretching nearly a kilometer over ancient lava fields, with meltwater from the Langjokull glacier flowing into the Hvita river, visible from several viewing platforms.
-
Barnafoss - Nearby is Barnafoss, also known as “the waterfall of the children,” named after a tragic incident where two local children fell from a stone bridge into the waters. The grieving mother had the bridge destroyed to prevent similar tragedies.
-
Husafell - Next, visit Husafell, a stunning woodland oasis and historical site featuring traditional turf houses and “elf huts” to delight children. Discover intriguing works by local artists and the famous “Lifting Stone of Husafell.” From Husafell, travel in 4WD vehicles further inland to Deildargil Canyon to see Langifoss, a towering two-tiered waterfall. Langifoss is a hidden gem, not marked on many maps, making it a special treat.
-
Husafell Canyon Baths - The highlight of the tour is the Canyon Baths, an enchanting and exclusive experience, featuring a traditional Icelandic hotpot deep in the magnificent Hringsgil canyon. Three geothermally-heated stone pools of varying temperatures (30-41°C or 86-105°F) are built here, along with a cold-water pot and a cooling waterfall, using traditional methods and materials. The Canyon Baths offer a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, accommodating no more than twenty visitors at a time. Sustainably built in a remote location, it’s a wonderful place to relax and unwind, imagining the early settlers bathing in the same way. The Canyon Baths are situated in a protected natural environment, so no soaps are allowed in the showers, but guests can use the facilities at Husafell for free. Bathing shoes and towels are provided.
