- Dhauli Giri Hills - 8 AM- The first stop is Dhauli, the site of the historic battle fought in 260 BC. Emperor Ashoka, the illustrious Mauryan King, emerged victorious but was deeply moved by the bloodshed, leading him to embrace peace and significantly contribute to the spread of Buddhism in India. Visitors can view Ashoka’s edicts carved on rocks in the ancient Brahmi script and Prakrit language.
The rock-cut Elephant sculpture here is among the oldest in India.
- Dhauli Peace Pagoda - Another notable feature of Dhauli is the Shanti Stupa or Peace Pagoda. This structure was built in 1972 through an Indo-Japanese collaboration by the Japan Buddha Sangh and the Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangh.
- Konark Sun Temple - The journey continues to Konark to witness one of India’s greatest architectural marvels. Constructed in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva, the temple is designed as a massive chariot with seven horses and twelve wheels, carrying the sun god, Surya, across the heavens. Early European sailors referred to the Sun Temple as ‘The Black Pagoda’.
A fascinating aspect of the architecture is the chariot’s wheels. The twelve pairs of wheels at the temple’s base are not ordinary; they function as a sundial and can tell time!
- Khandagiri Caves - The Khandagiri & Udayagiri caves served as retreats or cells for ancient Jain ascetics. These were constructed in the second century BC during the reign of King Kharavela of the Kalinga Kingdom. At the summit, there is also an 18th-century Jain temple.
- Rajarani Temple, Bhubaneswar - The Rajarani Temple, built in the 11th century from reddish and yellow sandstone known locally as Rajarani, derives its name from this material. The temple is renowned for its distinctive sculptures of women, depicted in poses of Odissi, the traditional dance form, as well as in everyday life scenes.
