Culinary Adventure for a Foodie - You will LOVE it - First, Come HUNGRY. We had an excellent guide, Emre, who had a vast knowledge of Çihangir, Pera and Karaköy and took us to wonderful places to sample Istanbul's tasty cuisine. We savored 19 different items - Cheese, Mussels, Shish Kebobs, Spicy Bulgar Balls, Turkish Delight, just to name a few. Walked thru Pera and learned about it's humble beginnings to be the "Paris" of the city. This tour is not just about food, but about the history, culture and traditions of Istanbul. Try EVERYTHING, you will be impressed! Thank you, Emre.

Great tastings with Faruk - Faruk was our guide on an afternoon of food tasting. He was great. He picked us up at our designated spot promptly and showed us the area. We ate at several different places. He took care of everything. He ordered the food and drink showed tums to good spots for a break from the street. He was so courteous and his English is excellent. My twenty something daughters and I really enjoyed our tour. Faruk deserves all 5 stars.

Excellent Introduction to Turkish Foods - Our guide, Tolga, met us just shortly before the appointed time. Tolga was a wealth of information regarding the food we consumed and local sights. He was truly a great guide. He led us through alleyways, main streets, and side streets to allow us to taste a very wide variety of Turkish foods that we would have never discovered on our own. The three hours we spent with him flew by and we had a delightful and memorable time.

Excellent!!! - Tour guide Emre was amazing! He was so friendly and knowledgeable. We had a tour not only of food, but of the neighborhoods we walked through. He knows so much history, great stories about different locations. And he has a lot of recommendations for all kinds of food places! He sent clear details about our meeting point, which was very helpful. And he also sent helpful general information about getting around Istanbul. Would absolutely recommend this tour with Emre!!!

A Missed Opportunity - Let me start by saying that it may have been an off day for our guide. He seemed a bit tired and said he had had a lot of work that day. Rather than compare the experience to what we might have expected, I'll compare it here simply to two recent experiences with food guides through WithLocals, one in Taipei and one in Prague. We had expected that the sites would be pre-selected and organized. They were not. We did not seem to be expected, seats were not reserved and the food had not been pre-ordered. We had expected that the sites would be local and unique yet one was a chain. The owners and wait staff did not always seem to know the guide. The food was not necessarily unique (a lot of chicken) to Turkey and the provenance rarely explained. The guide offered a couple of times to cut the tour short if we didn't want to walk or preferred to shop but that was not our intent. On our final night we had the ten-item tasting menu at a restaurant. Each dish was introduced, where it originated and how it was cooked. We remarked that this was what we had hoped the food tour would be. A lost opportunity. We still tipped the guide 20% as he made clear that he was saving for a house, caring for aging parents and working two jobs. TMI.

Not our usual food tour - We really hate to leave a low rating review, but after many food tours, this was not a very good one for us. We enjoyed trying some new foods from Istanbul, which was our primary objective and why we take food tours. However, there was very little discussion about the foods. We had to constantly ask what was the name of what we were eating, what were the ingredients, how is it made, what is the history, etc. And no interaction with the people making the food until we had tantuni (had to ask the host to write down the name of the food for us) when we got up on our own to watch it being made. Also, some of the portions were too big - heavy, pastry type food that we could not eat 6 pieces each and felt wasteful leaving. We expected a kebab, but did not have one and it seemed like we should have had more savory items before all the pastry ones. Maybe that’s the way it is done in Turkey, but we weren’t told that. Although we had plenty to eat volume wise, I’m not sure it was quality enough food to justify the high price of the tour, but I understand we were paying for the host’s time, which we appreciate. But overall, we have concluded that it is not a food tour that we would recommend.
