A staff member will be waiting at the exit to greet you. From the airport, you will be taken directly to Göbekli Tepe.
Potbelly Hill - Gobekli Tepe is one of the most significant archaeological sites globally. Dating back 12,000 years, it predates the invention of writing or pottery and is considered the world’s oldest ritual complex. This is a must-visit site that is reshaping archaeologists’ understanding of early human history.
Sanliurfa Archeology and Mosaic Museum - Enjoy a delightful lunch featuring kebabs before starting the exploration of Sanliurfa. The city has been inhabited since the time of the Babylonians, followed by the Hurrites, Hittites, Assyrians, and Greeks. Visits will include the Urfa Archaeological Museum and the Aleppo Bahce Mosaic Museum, which house extensive collections from the Harran and Gobeklitepe areas. Afterwards, stroll through the local covered bazaar and explore the town to uncover its many hidden gems.
Reji Kilisesi - Reji Church, a historical and cultural treasure of Şanlıurfa, offers visitors an unforgettable experience. Built in 1861 on the ruins of a 6th-century church, it was dedicated to two apostles of Jesus, bearing their names. The church was in use until 1924 when Assyrians from Urfa migrated to Aleppo, Syria. Later, it was repurposed by the Tekel administration as a tobacco factory and grape warehouse, earning the name “Regie Church” from the French word for Tekel. Inscribed tombstones from the church are displayed in the Urfa Museum. Reji Church is a must-see for visitors of all faiths.
Balikligol - Visit Abraham’s cave, the birthplace of the prophet Abraham, and the Pool of Prophet Abraham, believed to be where he was cast into the fire by Nimrod.
Continue Visit Sanliurfa and Return to Istanbul
KIzIlkoyun Nekropolu - The Kızılkoyun Caves, another historical and cultural gem of Şanlıurfa, provide an unforgettable experience. Dating back approximately 2,000 years to the Roman and Byzantine periods, the site includes rock tombs used by the Edessa Kingdom’s royal family. The necropolis features two Roman Era statues and a limestone sarcophagus within the rock tombs. The 1.85-meter-tall statues, dating to the 3rd-4th century AD, depict Roman soldiers in oriental attire with military gear. The limestone construction is characteristic of the region, and the site has become increasingly popular with visitors.
Harran Kalesi - Harran Castle, located southeast of the city, comprises the “Inner Castle” and “Lower Wall.” The Inner Castle, built adjacent to the city wall, features a rectangular plan with dodecagonal towers at its corners. Measuring 90 by 130 meters, the castle has three floors and includes a Sabian temple. The current form of the castle was established by Umayyad Caliph II. Mervan, who invested 10 million gold dirhams in its construction. Researchers suggest the castle contained 50 corridors and 150 rooms. The circular “outer castle” walls are 4 kilometers long and 5 meters high, with towers ranging from 15-17 meters. The castle has six gates: Aleppo, Raqqa, Aslanli, Mosul, Baghdad, and Anatolia, with only the Aleppo Gate still standing.
Harran Culture House - This area is identified as the location of Hârân mentioned in the Torah. Islamic histories link it to Mother-in-Law, a grandchild of Prophet Noah, or Aran (Haran), brother of Prophet Abraham. According to 13th-century historian Ibn Shaddad, Abraham lived here before moving to Palestine. Harran is called “the city of Prophet Abraham” due to his house, a mosque in his name, and a stone used during his time. Archaeological findings trace Harran’s history back to the 2nd millennium BC, with mentions in cuneiform tablets and the Ebla tablets from Northern Syria. Harran is strategically located at the crossroads of major trade routes from Northern Mesopotamia to the west and northwest.
Sanliurfa - After the final stop of the tour, guests will be transported to Sanliurfa airport for a return flight to Istanbul at 20:30. Upon arrival in Istanbul, a staff member will meet you at the airport and escort you back to your hotel. This concludes the tour. Şanlıurfa holds significant historical importance and boasts numerous historical sites. The tour aims to include a variety of destinations, ensuring a satisfying experience.
