Highlights
  • Palace of Tears - Meet our guide at the Tränenpalast museum at Friedrichstrasse Station to learn about how the post-war landscape of destroyed Berlin came to be divided and find itself at the heart of cold-war power struggles between East and West.

  • Berlin Nordbahnhof - Nordbanhof Station is a former ghost-station once strewn with barbed wire and manned by DDR border soldiers. You will learn about how the city’s infrastructure came to be divided between East and West and the complications this presented within the day-to-day realities of inhabitants to live, travel and work on both sides of the wall.

  • Memorial of the Berlin Wall - See how the city has preserved remnants of its difficult past. Our guide will provide a detailed explanation of the different phases of wall building and place this within the broader geo-political landscape of the Cold War.

  • Victims of the Berlin Wall Window of Remembrance - We will survey the photo’s of those killed at wall and hear the personal stories of those who fell victim to the DDR border regime.

  • Berlin Wall Memorial - At the Documentation Centre of the Wall to gain an unobstructed birds-eye view of the preserved ‘Death Strip’, untouched since 1989.

  • Chapel of Reconciliation - The tour will then cover the complicated history of the Church of Reconciliation, which found itself trapped between the two walls and took the status of symbolising the painful divide within the city.

  • Bernauer Str. 10a - You will learn about the popular protest movements that swept eastern Europe towards the end of the 20th Century and their influence on those in Berlin that gained momentum towards the end of the 80’s. The world watched as residents streamed through previously impenetrable border crossings, and Berlin found itself as a focal point within the developments that would end the Cold War.

  • Berlin - Tunnel 57 - We will also survey the infamous Tunnel 57, the largest and most successful escape tunnel to ever be built beneath the Wall.

  • Conrad Schumann Memorial - ‘Jump to Freedom Mural’. The tour will conclude with the events surrounding the fall of the wall in November 1989, which went down as quickly and unexpectedly as it went up 28 years previously.

Fascinating in-depth tour of Cold War period in Berlin! - Fascinating and in depth tour of the Berlin Wall period (post WW2-1990). We visited a ghost train station, the palace of tears where families said their goodbyes, the Berlin Wall, as well as the museum showing the daring escapes and the recruitment of informants by the Stasi. Scott (from Scotland) is extremely knowledgeable about the wars and the Cold War period and was an attentive and interesting and engaging guide, having lived and worked as a guide in Berlin for several years. Highly recommend this fascinating tour! I honestly was bummed when we were finished.

Back in time - Scott was very friendly. He provided us with a great overview of the history of the Berlin wall, answered questions and even helped us with our tickets. It was my niece's first time here in Berlin and she truly appreciate the tour and insights into history. Thanks Scott!
