Highlights
  • Memorial of the Berlin Wall - One of the most incredible sites related to the Berlin Wall and the scene of tragic loss and brilliant escapes. The memorial itself is over 1km long and includes the only preserved complete cross-section of the Berlin Wall and Death-Strip.
  • Checkpoint Charlie - The most famous of all the Check Points it was the scene of many failed and successful escapes and also an incredible face-off between the American and Soviet forces in the Autumn of 1961.
  • Topography of Terror - The section on Niederkirchnerstrasse is the only surviving fragment of the wall in this part of Berlin. It is right next to the former-Luftwaffe Headquarters which was used during the East German Period as the House of Ministries. It is also the site of one of the more incredible escapes into West Berlin.
  • GDR Watch Tower - Visit and possibly ascend the last of the “BT - variant” watchtowers that used to surround West Berlin. A rare survival saved thanks to a private initiative.
  • Potsdamer Platz - See how a desolate piece of land in, and also bounding, the death-strip has developed into a high-rise business and entertainment quarter. The rebirth of re-unified Berlin before your very eyes.

Hopefully We Learn from History - Extremely knowledgeable guide led us on a very interesting historical walk through what was once East Berlin before the fall of the wall in 1989. Our tour guide, being Jewish, gave us a perspective into what we were learning that we may not have otherwise received. Much historical value to the tour. As a history buff, would highly recommend.

Go on this Tour! - Our tour guide was/is an interesting walking encyclopedia. Super interesting tour. And he easily guided the 3 of us (not known to each other) around from train to bus, Also helped us get to our next tour(s). Learned so much more on this walking tour than just facts about the wall. Highly recommend.

Eye opening - I don’t think there was any detail or historical point that our guide did not know. He gave us a fantastic tour and complete background. We started at Brandenburg Gate, discussed the Reichstag building, the situation during the era right after the war and then under East. German control. We traveled by U to the wall memorial area and saw just how much tine, effort, resources had to go into the “wall” to insure no one escaped. The reality was clear and horrifying. We visited the Jewish memorial and Check point Charlie also. Quite a worthwhile tour.

Great experience - There were only thee of us (two no shows) so almost a private tour. Our guide was amazingly knowledgeable about everything. He knows statistics and dates and great little sceneries and personal stories, He was so helpful to us when we finished and needed to get to another tour across town. We traveled across the area and he made the experience a treat. We’ve done many history tours and this was one of the best.

Excellent tour - Steve Gibson was an excellent tour guide, giving us lots of information and interesting facts and stories about the wall, the wider Cold War, and about how people’s lives were impacted. We were a small group of just seven, which was very good. The three hours went by quickly and we would highly recommend the tour.

A great tour with Steve!!! - This was a great tour with Steve!! We went with Birchys on recommendation from my sister and are really pleased that we did. Our guide Steve is a native English speaker and has a huge amount of information to share about the history of the Berlin Wall and all that surrounded its creation and fall. There was not a single dull moment during our time with him and we learned a great deal. He was also a great source of recommendations for bars and restaurants and even checked our self created itinerary for the rest of our stay and made some good suggestions. Strongly recommended.
