- Umi Jigoku - Known as one of Beppu’s renowned Jigoku “hells,” Umi Jigoku or “Sea Hell” boasts breathtaking turquoise-blue waters heated to over 90°C (194°F), making it too hot to touch but perfect for stunning views! Created over 1,200 years ago by volcanic activity, its vibrant color is due to natural minerals. Observe the steam rising to create a mystical, otherworldly scene that highlights Beppu’s remarkable geothermal energy.
- Oniishibozu Jigoku - Oniishi Bozu Jigoku (Hell of the Monk’s Head) is an ancient hot spring that emits hot gray mud resembling a monk’s head. After the Meiji era (1868-1912), it became known as “Bozu Jigoku” and turned into a tourist attraction. It is one of the seven major Jigoku in Beppu and is situated next to the Sea Hell. It offers a free footbath and a variety of unique snacks within its facilities.
- Kamado Jigoku - Kamado Jigoku derives its name from an ancient myth where steamed rice was cooked using the fumarolic gas released at 98 degrees Celsius as an offering to the Ujigami (guardian god) during the Kamado Hachimangu Shrine Festival.
- Oniyama Jigoku - Also referred to as “Crocodile Hell,” Oniyama Jigoku was the first place in Japan, in 1923, to utilize hot spring heat for raising crocodiles. It currently houses around 70 crocodiles, including both crocodile and alligator species.
- Shiraike Jigoku - Nestled in a Japanese-style garden with a serene ambiance, Shiraike Jigoku, the “White Pond Hell,” is named after the clear, colorless hot spring water that erupts and naturally turns a pale blue as the temperature and pressure decrease when it falls to the pond’s bottom.
- Kannawa Onsen - Beppu, facing the sea and surrounded by mountains, boasts many unique and appealing hot spring resort areas. Kannawa Onsen is one such area, gaining popularity for its retro townscape and steamy atmosphere. Enjoy a leisurely stroll and discover its charm!
- Tatsumaki Jigoku - Tatsumaki Jigoku is an intermittent geyser recognized as a natural monument by Beppu City. The hot water erupts spectacularly at regular intervals, held back by a roof, but it can spurt up to about 30 meters.
- Chinoike Jigoku - Known as the “Blood Pond Hell,” Chinoike Jigoku is Japan’s oldest natural hell, dating back over 1,300 years and mentioned as “Akayusen” in the Bungo no Kuni Fudoki, a book from the Nara period. Red hot mud containing iron oxide, magnesium oxide, and other substances, formed through a natural chemical reaction under high temperatures and pressure underground, erupts from the stratum and accumulates, turning the entire reservoir surface red.
