- Beppu Ropeway - Ascend 1300 meters above sea level on Kyushu’s largest Ropeway. The Beppu Ropeway transports visitors to the summit of Mt. Tsurumi, an active volcano and the origin of Beppu Hot Springs, offering panoramic views of Beppu and Beppu Bay.
- Mt. Yufu - Mount Yufu, a 5,195 ft volcano, is situated on the border of Yufu and Beppu. It will be visible on the journey to Yufuin.
- Sagiridai Observatory - Positioned between Yufuin and Beppu along the Yamanami Highway (Prefectural Route 11), this observatory is renowned as one of Kyushu’s most scenic driving spots. This stop provides a stunning view of the Yufuin Basin from 680 meters above sea level.
- Yufuin Area - This rural Japanese town evokes the charm of a beloved Ghibli film. Experience the Japanese countryside hills and wander around creeks and delightful cafes.
- Lake Kinrin - A walk to Lake Kinrin is planned. Nestled beneath Mt. Yufu, the lake was historically known as takemoto-no-ike or “lake under the mountain” by locals. It was renamed Kinrin, or “golden scales,” by Mori Kuso, a Confucius scholar, in 1884 after he observed golden-scaled fish in the waters at sunset.
- Umi Jigoku - [Optional activity, subject to schedule] One of Beppu’s renowned “hells,” Umi Jigoku boasts stunning turquoise-blue waters heated to over 90°C (194°F) — too hot to touch but perfect for breathtaking views. Created over 1,200 years ago by volcanic activity, its vibrant color is due to natural minerals. Witness steam rising to create a mystical, otherworldly scene that highlights Beppu’s remarkable geothermal power.

Gin is the best! - Gin picked us up on time and off we went to an observation tower to view the city with all the steam coming up. Then we went to the Hells. Our favorite was the Bloody Hell. He also took us to a restaurant where we used the steam to cook our meal. My husband needs knee surgery and Gin was so kind to go back to his office and get him a walker. As my husband knee was giving him a lot of bother, Gin took us to get some pain patches which really helped. He took us to his favorite sushi restaurant which we thoroughly enjoyed. As I needed a pair of shoes, he took us to a mall and was extremely patient with me while I was searching for the perfect pair.
He was extremely knowledgeable and definitely would use him again.

5 start memorable day thanks to Gin our amazing guide - We had an outstanding shore excursion experience in Beppu, and it truly exceeded all expectations. Beppu is one of those ports where if you just stick with the standard cruise ship excursions, you’ll likely end up with a very limited experience. Choosing an independent tour with Gin made all the difference. He took us beyond the usual stops—over the mountain to the scenic Yufuin shopping district, set up a private onsen experience just for our family, and then guided us to an incredible sushi restaurant where he sat down with us, helped us order a wide variety of dishes, and ensured we enjoyed the freshest sushi meal imaginable.
Gin is not only an exceptional guide but also a PhD student in travel and tourism, and it shows. His English is flawless, his car was spotless, and his knowledge, professionalism, and warm hospitality made the day special. He had an awesome attitude, was wonderful to talk to throughout the day, and took us to multiple highlights around Beppu. The kids absolutely loved him, and as parents we appreciated his patience, care, and expertise.
On the ship later, I spoke with people who had gone to the Dutch Village or just to see the sulfur springs, and many of them did not enjoy those excursions. Honestly, we had already seen plenty of sulfur springs elsewhere, and to spend your day just sitting on a bus to see another one seemed like a missed opportunity. By contrast, having Gin guide us through this personalized experience—Yufuin shopping, private onsen, phenomenal sushi, and multiple sights—was without question a far better way to spend both our time and our money.
Out of all the independent excursions we arranged during our 10-day cruise, Gin’s service in Beppu stood out as the best. He is a brilliant, kind, and capable human being who truly cares about delivering an unforgettable experience. We could not recommend Gin more highly—his professionalism and customer service are absolutely top-notch.

Fantastic tour - We took this tour on our cruise ship stop, and highly recommend this over the cruise ship group tours. Our guide Gin was very personable, and was able to customize the itinerary to our interests. He even got us reservations at a local private Onsen (definitely recommend!).

Great Day - Gin was our guide and he was amazing. Very polite, knowledgeable, and accommodating.
It poured down rain while we were there so he gave us different options on the fly for our tour.

A Beppu must! - We visited on a cruise stop and we saw and experienced everything in the town and surrounding areas, unlike any of the passengers who took the crowded cruise tours. If you want to see everything, definitely get a private guide because things are a little spread out and you will miss things because they are not obvious. Our guide was fantastic and we had a plan, but he was able to customize things along the way based on our input. Worth every bit and realistically really not that much more expensive when you consider the cost of the crowded tours through the cruise company. We never felt concerned about getting back to the cruise terminal on time. Everything was well managed and planned.

Unforgettable day with family in beautiful landscapes ⛰ - If you're looking for a laid-back day trip that combines nature, culture, and a touch of adventure, this tour is a must-do. Our tour guide is a good-looking and polite Japanese boy, he picked us up from the Beppu Station with a spacious van, he speaks perfect English and he is ready to share all he know about the city with you and fulfill your wishes during the trip.
The Beppu Ropeway has stunning panoramic views of the city and bay, you can explore a little Japanese shrine or take a stroll along the hiking trails. After descending, our guide took us to the charming town of Yufuin, there are anime-related shops, cozy cafes, and a nice lake with Koi fish.
Whether you're savoring local sweets, browsing unique boutiques, or simply soaking in the traditional atmosphere, this tour provides a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.
Highly recommended for anyone visiting the Beppu area!

Outstanding and a must if visiting via cruise ship - There is no way we could have seen everything without booking this tour. We were on a cruise ship and I am so glad we did the private tour and did not go with the large groups offered by the cruise ship. We saw and experienced so much more through the lens of a local and not just the common tourist places. Our guide, Gene was a delight, personable, and professional. He bonded with my teenage son who was traveling with us and he was very adaptable to show us different places along the way. His English was outstanding and we had a remarkable day.

Extraordinary Experience in the town of hot Spring♨️ - Our guide is a young Japanese boy, who speaks perfect English and is very knowledgeable in the local history, culture and cuisine. He showed us the most gorgeous and interesting places in Beppu and Yufuin within one day.
From the ropeway, we could see the entire city of Beppu and the bay view was absolutely spectacular!
Yufuin was a diverse town with a lot of traditional Japanese shops and snack bars. I personally felt the Yufuin brewery most attractive, where there's a variety of beer (white, black, ginger...) you can have a bottle of brewed beer while walking in the town, so refreshing.
If you have any preferences, you can always tell the guide, I'm sure that he'll try his best to customise the tour and satisfy everyone in the group.
Anyway, it's a wonderful experience!
